Finding a comfortable office chair has been a struggle for me. Mainly because I have short legs and a constant need to fidget. While a sit-stand desk helps relieve this a little, I still find I’m uncomfortable in my chair by the end of the day.

I have found chairs that have been great at the start, but my back soon starts to ache again because I can’t just sit still in the way the chair is designed to support. I’m very aware that the problem is me, but I didn’t expect to ever find a solution. Luckily, I was wrong. Enter the ThunderX3 Core Loft.

The Ducky ProjectD Tinker 65 is a great entry level mechanical keyboard, but falls short of perfection

The first thing you’ll notice about the ThunderX3 Core is that the box is big enough to fit a fully-grown teenager in, and the second can make a mansion for two cats - trust me, it’s been tested. The size is mostly due to the packaging, ensuring it arrives in top condition, but the chair itself is average size.

It’s easy to assemble, and I did it single-handedly in about 15 minutes or so. If you remember before you begin that you have an electric screwdriver with hex attachments, it’s even faster.

Usually, desk chairs are focused on ergonomics or looks. If you are someone who likes the ‘gamer chair’ aesthetic this often comes at the cost of more boring features like back support and adjustability. You’ll get some ergonomic features, sure, but not as many as if you plump for that very dull-looking office chair. Until now.

The ThunderX3 Core Loft combines the gamer chair style with the largest number of adjustment options I’ve ever seen in my life. Not only can you adjust the height, arms, and back as usual, but you can also adjust the seat depth. This alone makes a huge difference to my short self and means that my legs don’t stick out slightly forward at all times, making me look like a toddler in a far too big chair.

By adjusting every level I could find I was able to get the chair to fit perfectly, and the included footrest not only matches, but is far more comfortable than the one I already had. Still, while the chair can be adjusted to suit, it’s the use over time that tends to be when things unravel due to my fidgety nature.

I’ve been a fidgeter as long as I can remember. Staying still isn’t something I’m capable of. Even when I’m supposed to be still, I’m usually wiggling my toes in my shoes, or twisting my hands. It’s a common thing in neurodiverse people like myself, and as a result, makes finding a chair that’s comfortable long-term very difficult.

If you don’t like to live as dangerously as me, there is also a black version of the chair which is PU leather.

The problem with being a fidgeter is that no matter how good the lumbar support on a chair is, I won’t stay where it is. When I’m at my desk for a minimum of eight hours a day, even allowing for the time I stand up, it’s still a lot of time in a chair; making myself increasingly uncomfortable by constantly moving in a way that chairs are not designed to accommodate, or so I thought.

When you look at the back rest of the ThunderX3 you’ll notice that it sticks out. It looks slightly odd, but it’s the single greatest thing I’ve ever found in a chair.

The entire lumbar support is ergonomically shaped and attached to the back of the chair in the middle, rather than all over. Practically, this means that when I move, the lumbar support moves with me.

At first, it feels odd, a little like being on one of those boards on top of a ball, except you won’t land on your backside if you have no sense of balance. But soon I was fully on board. I realised that no matter which way I fidget, the chair continues to support me. It literally moves when I do. Combined with the many adjustment levels I could find a setting that means my back is always benefitting from proper support. The difference is immense.

Not only is my back well supported but the sensation of the chair moving when I do is very satisfying for a sensory-seeker like myself. I’ve been using this chair for two months now and I still love it as much as the day I first sat on it.

Usually, by now a chair has been downgraded from I love this to, it would be great if I didn’t have to move so much. Not here. From the memory cushion headrest to the wheels which stay put when I’m sitting, even on my laminate flooring, everything is incredibly comfortable.

I have the grey loft version of the chair and while I adore the feel of the fabric and the overall look, it does come with an innate sense of panic whenever I eat or drink near my desk. However, when I did spill my drink on it last week - I mean it was inevitable really - a wet cloth rectified the issue immediately and you wouldn’t know if I hadn’t said anything. The fact that you can also adjust the chair so much means there are no fiddly nooks and crannies to get dirty either.

Overall the Thunder X3 Core Loft is the most comfortable chair I’ve ever owned as well as the most satisfying to sit in. I finally feel like my chair can meet my unique needs long-term, and that’s something I never expected to find.
