Fighting games are always defined by their characters and Arc System Works have some of the best in their fighting game series. Iconic series by them such as Guilty Gear or BlazBlue have wonderful giant casts with heroic characters as well as some questionably strange and zany ones.

From deranged doctors to uncanny animal hybrids, Arc System Works sure knows how to create wacky, weird and wonderful characters for each of their fighting game rosters, and we love each of them. Without these weirdos, an Arc System game would just not be complete and some of them are ridiculously unhinged.

Uzuki From Under Night In-Birth

The Sadistic Necromancer

First Appearance

Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late

Latest Appearance

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes

This elegant woman is a necromancer who finds death and the suffering of others just a little bit too much fun. Uzuki appears throughout the Under Night In-Birth games as part of the group Amnesia, and while she doesn't care much for the organization, they do allow her to cause as much chaos and suffering as she likes.

Only making her first playable debut in Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes, Uzuki is shown to be an unhinged and maniacal necromancer throughout the series who loves playing with her extreme powers just to bring disaster and ruin to people. She's self-absorbed to the core and will happily take the lives of millions while smiling and cackling throughout the shrieks of suffering.

Zappa From Guilty Gear

Possessed To Fight

First Appearance

Guilty Gear XX

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Strive

Many ArcSys characters have an unassuming appearance that may make you think they are normal, but some, such as the possessed Zappa, have a dark story tied to them. Zappa was an ordinary guy, but he seemed to be popular among spirits as they frequently possess him to the point where he always has multiple spirits within his body.

The worst part is that Zappa himself cannot see the spirits or even feel them and this leads him to believe he has some rare diease or condition, when in truth, things are much worse. Being possessed, his fighting style is jittery with him moving freakishly around and attacking in painful ways that no human ever would and fighting against him is equally a nightmare.

Merkava From Under Night In-Birth

The Mysterious Void With A Human Heart

First Appearance

Under Night In-Birth

Latest Appearance

Under Night In-Birth II Sys:Celes

The Voids are one of the reoccurring enemies of the Under Night In-Birth series who await in the Hollow Night realm without consciousness in order to consume Existence, the source of all things. These fantasy zombies are alien enough on their own, but Merkava is what happens when a Void somehow keeps their human side after transforming.

Merkava struggles between both his Void tendencies and his human sanity; however, his powers are unlike those of any normal Void. He can transform his limbs and distort his body at will, which he uses to fight in a frightening body-horror way. While he has a human side, Merkava is still brutal and does what he has to do to not only survive but quell his Void needs.

Dizzy From Guilty Gear

A Regular Human With Gear Blood

First Appearance

Guilty Gear X

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Strive

As long as you have played one Guilty Gear game, you will likely recognize the Queen of compassion herself, Dizzy. This half-Gear, half-human hybrid is a gentle soul who wants nothing more than to bring no harm to humanity, unlike her mother, and while she may seem normal, one quick look at her wings tells you more than enough.

The most bizarre part of Dizzy is her two living guardian wings, Necro and Undine, who are both personifications of her instincts. These two both have minds of their own; Necro is a demonic-looking personification of Dizzy's violent thoughts, and on the opposite side of the spectrum, Undine is an angel representation of her self-preservation, protecting Dizzy over anything else.

Faust From Guilty Gear

Not A Horror Game Antagonist We Swear

First Appearance

Guilty Gear X

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Strive

This spindly doctor may look like the stereotypical horror game antagonist, but Faust deserves to be seen for more than his rough exterior. Faust was once an ordinary surgeon, but after failing to save a young patient's life, he lost his mind and started killing people only to regain sense and try to take his own life.

At this total low point, Faust decides to instead dedicate his skills to saving anyone he can, to atone for what he did. As expected of a mad doctor who once had a lust for blood, even catching a glimpse of the red substance almost pushes him back over the line of insanity. However, he is almost always able to take control of himself before anything bad happens.

Hazama From BlazBlue

Enjoyer Of Pain

First Appearance

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger

Latest Appearance

BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle

What may look like your average evil villain, Hazama, hides a slithering secret or two behind his cunning mind and scheming smile. Hazama is an artifical being who was used as a vessel for BlazBlue's main antagonist, Yuuki Terumi. Along with this, he also wields Ouroboros powers that allow him to constrict even the strongest of foes in his painful traps.

What makes Hazama a total freak is his desire to cause suffering and pain because he cannot feel it himself. He wishes to know what pain feels like and so causes as much chaos as he can using his dangerous powers and sharp intellect towards others to manipulate anyone he can get his grubby snaky mitts on.

Bedman From Guilty Gear

Sweet Dreams...

First Appearance

Guilty Gear Xrd Sign

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Strive

The anime style of Guilty Gear does not mean it is free of mechanical horrors and one of the weirdest of the series is Bedman and, well, his bed. This is no ordinary bed we are talking about here, as the bed that Bedman uses is a mechanized hospital bed that has its own AI along with perhaps a few too many weapons.

In Strive, Bedman returns, but this time the man part is missing. Bedman himself dies in between games, and it is assumed that now his spirit is possessing the machine as it has the same strong drive to protect his sister as he always did. Now, with Delilah controlling it, the bed is even more creepy than before with exposed parts and even teeth that make it unnervingly weird.

Paracelsus And A.B.A From Guilty Gear

The Key To Her Heart

First Appearance

Guilty Gear Isuka

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Strive

This artificial homunculus has just a few screws loose, but that makes her all the more special. A.B.A is a low-energy, smart-minded being who is timid in nature due to her isolated life. She doesn't have many goals except one teeny one, she is obsessed with finding a way to give her creator, Paracelsus, a new body.

Her supposed 'husband', is always held right in her hands and, despite never consenting to that title, Paracelsus is a close friend to A.B.A. Paracelsus adds even more strangeness to A.B.A, as not only is he a living key demon which is weird in its own right, but by absorbing blood he grows stronger, allowing A.B.A to wield him more easily.

Leopaldon From Guilty Gear

The Dog Beast Gear... Thing?

First Appearance

Guilty Gear Isuka

Latest Appearance

Guilty Gear Isuka

Guilty Gear is consistent with its characters. If they have been playable, they will likely be brought back for future entries at least as long as they aren't from a spin-off. Guilty Gear Isuka was one of the earliest spin-offs that still uses the fighting game formula the series is known for but with some new twists, including the debut of the series' most horrific boss.

Leopaldon is an amalgamation of a dog and dead Gear fused together being reanimated by the dog's owner, making for one hulking creature that acts as the arcade mode's boss. Not only does this sound like a nightmare, but it also looks like one with a giant beast of a Gear keeping its mouth open at all times while the poor dog seemingly pilots it from inside.

Arakune From BlazBlue

A Desire To Kill

First Appearance

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger

Latest Appearance

BlazBlue: Central Fiction

The less humanoid a character is, the stranger they tend to be, and you can't get more strange than Arakune, the monster made of pure liquid Seither. This haunting creature has a dark appearance and an even more sinister desire to kill and feed to sustain itself with no other thoughts in its mind.

In battle, Arakune is just as dangerous and strange, being one of the most unpredictable and hard-to-read characters as it can instantly change its body shape at a whim. These shapes are seemingly limitless and yet one thing always stays the same; the emotionless cold mask stares at Arakune's foe ready to take their life in an instant...
