EA Is Finally Pulling The Plug On Origin, Users Will Have To Switch To The EA App

Summary
- EA will finally shut down Origin on April 17, 2025.
- Anyone still using Origin will have to make the switch over to the EA App to keep playing their games.
- EA App doesn't work on 32-bit operating systems, meaning you'll have to upgrade if you were using an older one.
After 13 years of being everyone's least favourite platform, EA is finally shutting Origin down on April 17. From this date onwards, anyone still using Origin will have to switch over to the EA App, or they will lose access to their game libraries.
This means that any EA games bought through Origin will now be unplayable if you're using a 32-bit operating system, since the EA App only works on 64-bit operating systems. However, if you upgrade, you should find all of your games on the EA App once you've switched over from Origin.
Origin Is Finally Shutting Down On April 17
EA's incredibly unpopular distribution platform lasted 13 years
"On April 17, 2025, Origin will shut down, as Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software," reads a page on the EA website, detailing how users can keep their games. "If you use Origin, you need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires a 64-bit version of Windows."
As the page states, your games should be waiting for you as soon as you log in to the app, using the same login details you would for Origin. You might have to reinstall some mods if you were playing with them, but otherwise, you should be good to go.
Origin was introduced in 2011, but often frustrated PC gamers. Many players just don't like having to use more than one storefront, especially if they already have so many games on Steam and only need to download another for a handful of titles. This was exacerbated by EA making many of its games Origin exclusive, something it went back on in 2020. Now, with games that launched in that period of Origin exclusivity already ported over to competitors like Steam and GOG, you might only need the EA App for your older purchases.
Origin's demise isn't too surprising. Of course, EA raises the point about Windows pulling support for 32-bit operating systems, but EA had already seemed poised to make this move. After all, Origin is incompatible with Xbox Game Pass, which requires you to link to an EA App account to access titles with EA Play.
