Summary

  • Patch 8 introduced a 'technically legal' exploit to steal money from vendors.
  • This works by selling a weapon that is bound to you with Weapon Bond.
  • Vendors across the realm are confused about their goods disappearing.

Baldur's Gate 3 gives you plenty of ways to manipulate things in your favour. If you don't succeed in the straightforward way, there's always another way to reach your goal. If that isn't possible either, you can just break the game to get what you want. Who can forget when Matt Mercer stacked 45 crates and used an Arrow of Transposition to get into a restricted area?

If you're thinking about going back to Baldur's Gate 3, the final patch is a perfect excuse.

There are plenty of such 'technically legal' exploits you can perform to get the upper hand in the game. It seems Patch 8, the final big update to Baldur's Gate 3, has introduced a feature that will now allow you to literally steal from vendors if you're in need of more gold. Once again, the Hexblade subclass has shown why it's everyone's new favourite.

Hexblade? More Like Nixblade

As pointed out by Bugout76 on Reddit, Hexblade Warlocks can use Weapon Bond to sell a weapon to a vendor, only for it to reappear in their inventory. The action binds a weapon to the user, so it cant be knocked out of their hand and returns to their inventory if thrown. This means that it is actually legal according to the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset that Baldur's Gate 3 follows.

However, it's not as simple as selling the weapon and finding it in your inventory – the devs have thought of that. But a bit of tinkering in the vendor's barter menu will let you pull it off. "You bind a Pact Weapon, put any random weapon in the barter window, and drag the barter weapon onto your equipped pact weapon," explained one comment. "You’ll equip the random weapon with the pact weapon in the barter menu, which you can infinitely sell."

Unfortunately, this is only possible on PC for some reason. Considering it kind of follows the rules of the game, fans are hoping Larian doesn't fix it, as it is technically a bug. So, you don't have to go around pickpocketing or knocking vendors out in order to get your money back. This way your conscience is clear about harming them, and you can get giggles out of selling them the same weapon over and over again.
