Alchemical ingredients The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered might be a dime-a-dozen, but ectoplasm is a completely different - and incredibly rarer - kind of beast. With this remaster even further limiting its scant supply, finding ectoplasm is harder than ever.

PostsThankfully, knowing where to look can vastly reduce the time spent trying to appease your Fighting Guild allies and certain bossy daedra. As a new hand touches this guide, you'll learn what this rare substance is used for and how to increase your chances of farming for one of Tamriel's sparsest ingredients. Just remember to keep your hands off any beacons along the way.
What Can I Use Ectoplasm For?
Ectoplasm is an alchemical crafting ingredient that has the following effects:
1st
Shock Damage
2nd
Dispel
3rd
Fortify Magicka
4th
Damage Health
It is required for two separate quests:
- Fighter's Guild quest: Drunk and Disorderly (x5)
- Meridia's daedric quest (x1)
Where Can I Find Ectoplasm?
In the Remastered edition, it appears there is only one static location for Ectoplasm in Tamriel:
- On a table in All Things Alchemical
Otherwise, you can sometimes buy Ectoplasm at alchemy stores across the Empire. Its appearance rate, sadly, is very rare.
Ectoplasm used to be found on the ground behind one of the benches at Meridia's Shrine. However, this sample appears to no longer be present in current versions, meaning players will now have to leave the shrine in search of Ectoplasm to start Meridia's quest if they did not already bring some.
How To Farm For Ectoplasm
Ectoplasm only drops from a special type of undead known as Ethereal Undead. Any standard undead has a one-in-three chance of becoming ethereal, but this possibility is only possible after the player has reached level six.
Undead that can either become Ethereal or who otherwise drop Ectoplasm are:
- Ghosts: normal and ancient
- Wraiths: normal, faded, and gloom
- Sanctified Dead
- Spectral Sailors
There are special locations where ethereal dead are always guaranteed to appear. The locations with the most amount of guaranteed Ethereal Undead are:
- Sancre Tor
- Vahtacen
- Rielle
Some quests are guaranteed to include several Ethereal Undead. These quests include:
Where Spirits Have Lease
In Benirus Manor in Anvil
The Ghost Ship of Anvil
At Serpent's Wake in Anvil
The Forlorn Watchman
At the wreck of the Emma May at the Mouth of the Panther
However, we recommend first visiting any of the Great Chapel's undercrofts in:
- Anvil
- Bruma
- Bravil
- Leyawiin
- Skingrad
These locations are very easy to enter, and you're always guaranteed three to five Ethereal Undead in each.
The undercrofts are mostly behind locked doors. You will either need to pickpocket a key from the head priest or use your lockpicks to open the doors. Thankfully, they are easy locks to pick.
As you spend a lot of time fighting the Ethereal Undead, it is important to note that they are completely resistant to:
- Normal weapon attacks
- Frost
- Poison
- Silence spells
As such, you will need to rely on magical spells or weapons to deal any damage against them.
