Minecraft Executive Producer Has Her Say On If The Game Will Get A Sequel

Summary
- Mojang has ruled out a Minecraft 2, and instead plans to continue supporting the current game for another 15 years at least.
- Ten years ago, shortly after Microsoft acquired Mojang, it said the same thing, planning to support the game until at least 2020.
- Notch did announce a spiritual successor in January, but he scrapped that idea less than a week later.
Minecraft has sold over 300 million copies, surpassing GTA 5, Wii Sports, and Mario Kart 8 to become the best-selling game of all-time. Usually, that would guarantee a sequel, but Mojang isn't interested.
"Do you think we're going to have an Earth 2?" executive producer Ingela Garneij mused to IGN. "No, no, there's no Minecraft 2. We've existed for 15 years. We want to exist at least 15 years more."
Garneij also said that the game will never go free-to-play, arguing that the $29.99 price tag is "the best deal in the world."
However, that decision doesn't come without its drawbacks. Garneij admitted that the "15-year-old technology slows us down" and that "the age of the game is a challenge", but that hasn't stopped Mojang from releasing a regular cadence of updates. Just this weekend, at Minecraft Live 2025, the Swedish developer unveiled two major updates launching this year: the first, Spring to Life, releases today, and the second, which is currently unnamed, is launching later this year and will allow you to tame and ride Ghasts.
Mojang Already Ruled Out Minecraft 2 Ten Years Ago
As reported by GameSpot, shortly after Microsoft bought Mojang in 2014, former CEO Jonas Mårtensson likewise ruled out the possibility of a hypothetical Minecraft 2, claiming that the game would instead be supported until at least 2020. "I can't promise forever [that] there'll never be a Minecraft 2, but for the forseeable future there won't be."
The game has lasted well beyond his estimations, celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2024, while Garneij now plans to continue support until at least 2040. That being said, Minecraft creator Notch, who was excluded from the game's tenth anniversary due to his controversial comments on social media, announced in January he planned to launch a spiritual successor.
But he scrapped those plans less than a week later. So, no Minecraft 2, and no spiritual successor.
