As you venture into the Nord Mines in Metaphor: ReFantazio, you'll be faced with your real human battle that doesn't involve handholding you through the entire fight. You'll also be able to control your party members by this point, as well as having a full team of Archetype users.

Homo Fulquilo is a weird little bird dude that can pack more of a punch than you think he will, so don't go in unprepared. Here's everything you need to know about this fight, including weaknesses, party setup, and strategies. Naturally, depending on the difficulty setting you choose, you may find this battle harder or easier.

Pre-Battle Prep

You'll encounter your first Magla Hollow shortly before the battle with Homo Fulquilo, which should clue you into the fact you're about to face a challenge. Prepare your party, ensure they are fully healed and have plenty of MP (you should have some Magla Pills to achieve this), and then save.

There's also a vendor just outside of the Magla Hollow. Depending on how much money you have, I recommend at least a couple of Revival Medicines, ensure you have some Medicine of some kind, and if you have extra cash to spare, an Ice Chunk or two may come in handy as Homo Fulquilo is weak to ice.

Recommended Party Setup

You don't get much say in the way of party setup this early in the game, you're simply stuck with Strohl and Grius. In terms of Archetypes and Formation, we recommend the following:

Character

Archetype

Formation

Strategy

Protagonist

Seeker

Back

Buffing Grius with Tarukaja and healing as needed.

Strohl

Warrior

Front

Taking the brunt of attacks on the front row (and guarding against them) and using Diagonal Slash otherwise.

Grius

Mage

Back

Casting Blizz to target Homo Fulquilo's weakness.

Homo Fulquilo has a move that targets the front row and with the protagonist having a weakness to Fire attacks, it's best to keep them as far back alongside the weaker defense Mage as well.

If you are particularly struggling with this fight due to the protagonist's weakness to Fire, you can change them from Seeker to Mage to have another Blizz user, but this does mean you'll be solely relying on items for healing.

Moveset

Hyper

Begins concentrating and will target the front row. (The sign to prepare for a strong attack.)

Bonfire of the Vanities

This follows Hyper and is a very hefty fire attack on all those in the front row.

Vitalja

Increases Homo Fulquilo's attack and defence dramatically.

Gabot

Fire damage to all party members.

Bot

Fire damage to one party member.

Attack

Physical damage to one party member.

Powerful Strike

Physical damage to one party member.

Battle Strategy

Open with the protagonist to cast Tarukaja on Grius. Ensure Grius is casting Blizz and then just use Diagonal Slash with Strohl.

Homo Fulquilo will open with Hyper, making it concentrate and target the front row, which translates to 'a big attack is incoming'. Ensure Grius and the protagonist are on the back row and Guard with Strohl when this happens.

On its next attack, Homo Fulquilo will unleash Bonfire of the Vanities on everyone in the front row and follow it up with Vitalja to increase its attack and defense.

Maintain your strategy of casting Blizz with Grius and healing/buffing with the protagonist while Strohl tanks and spanks. Homo Fulquilo will use a mix of physical and fire attacks on its turns, so keep on top of healing as these can cause some serious damage.

As the protagonist is weak to Fire as Seeker, getting hit by Bot and Gabot in succession can KO them. This is where those Revival Medicines come in handy.

Additionally, if it uses Bot and Gabot against the protagonist, it can earn itself an extra Turn Icon or two, so watch out for that.

Every time Homo Fulquilo's Vitalja wears off, it will use Hyper again to concentrate and target the front row, so remember to Guard with Strohl on your next Turn Icon to prepare for the Bonfire of Vanities attack that is sure to follow.

If you did buy some Ice Chunks, you can use them with either the protagonist (if you don't need to heal) or Strohl to get some extra ice damage in.

You'll earn a Magla Potion for defeating Homo Fulquio.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is easily compared to Persona, but it's also a fresh new entry for Atlus that shouldn't be seen as just another Persona-like.
