Being as formidable as he is, many struggle to deal with this force of nature. Luckily, this guide will change that by providing all the information you’ll need. Ranging from what to expect when facing him, which heroes are the most effective at countering him as well as what the best playstyles are to utilize against him.

How To Counter Thor

Thor's main strength is his ability to get into the backline and take out your Strategists before retreating to his allies. His Awakening Rune ability grants him temporary health as well as increases the rangeand damage of his attacks. Once he is done dealing with his desired targets and needs a quick retreat, he'll use his Storm Surge ability to fly away.

Luckily, his strength is also his greatest weakness if you deny his escape. Selecting heroes that prevent Thor from returning to his team with stuns or Crowd Control (CC) and focusing all attacks on him will put you and your team in a very advantageous position.

There are many heroes that can lock Thor down effectively. Here are just a few heroes from each role:

How To Counter Thor as a Strategist

As stated previously, you are Thor's main target as you will be the deciding factor in team fights. The best strategy to prevent yourself from being eliminated quickly is to stick close by to an ally, Strategist or Vanguard, as both can keep you alive with heals or by taking aggro off you. Additionally, using a CC ability and communicating with allies can make Thor an easy kill for your team.

Heroes like Luna Snow and Mantis are perfect picks for this, as both can completely immobilize Thor for a few seconds. Mantis' Spore Slumber is much more effective at sedating Thor than Luna Snow's Absolute Zero. This is mainly due to Mantis' ability being an area-of-effect (AOE) rather than Luna Snow'saimed projectile.

Luna Snow's Absolute Zero ability also has a downside, being that if the frozen Thor is attacked in any way, he will immediately unfreeze.

How To Counter Thor as a Duelist

As a Duelist, your main job when facing a Thor is to protect your Strategists by reducing his health as quickly as possible. Combining your high damage output with your supports' CC abilities is the most efficient way of doing so.

Wolverine is the go-to for dealing with almost any Vanguard as his damage increases based on how much health a hero has. Should Thor dive into your backline, dash towards himwith Vicious Rampage, then immediately activate his Feral Leap to pick Thor up and move him away from your Strategists. Once isolated, claw through his health while your Strategists sit back and heal any damage he tries to inflict on you.

You can control the direction you go when using Feral Leap and take your opponent in an entirely different direction.

Whilst not having any CC, Punisher is also a very good choice. This is mainly due to his shotgun dealing massive amounts of damage the closer he fires it. Sticking with your Strategists when the Thor inevitably dives onto them and quickly unloading shots will make him think twice before trying to do so again.

How To Counter Thor as a Vanguard

As a Vanguard, your jobs are to prevent Thor from getting into your backline and/or prevent him from escaping back to his team. Keeping a close eye on Thor's current position is crucial to consistently shutting him down before he even makes his move.

Groot is the most effective Vanguard at preventing Thor from both entering and exiting your backline with his ability to create walls. Should Thor be preparing an assault on your backline, immediately place a wall right in his face to stop him in his tracks. If he does manage to get through your defenses, place a wall separating him from his team to prevent him from escaping and receiving any support.

Thor, funnily enough, is also a great counter to himself. When the opposing Thor attempts to dive into your backline, intercept him with Storm Surge and push him away from your team. He'll be forced to retreat to his team and will have no choice but to waste his abilities to survive.
