WWE 2K25 promises to deliver a nostalgic experience for wrestling fans by featuring a stage that pays homage to the Ruthless Aggression era. The WWE 2K series has a long history of celebrating wrestling heritage, whether through Showcase Modes showcasing modern stars like Rey Mysterio and John Cena or by including downloadable characters that span the generations. The excitement builds as WWE 2K25 prepares to reveal its new gameplay features leading up to its launch.

The Anoaʻi Family Showcase

This year’s 2K Showcase mode shifts its focus to the storied Anoaʻi wrestling family, presenting matches that celebrate the legacies of The Rock, Yokozuna, Jacob Fatu, and WWE 2K25’s cover athlete, Roman Reigns. In a recent PlayStation State of Play presentation, Paul Heyman, an iconic figure in WWE history, provided insights into the game’s new Island mode. This online environment allows up to 50 players to explore settings inspired by famous WWE Superstars and engage in competitive matches to unlock exclusive content.

Nods to WWE’s History

Longtime fans of WWE may find several Easter eggs throughout WWE 2K25. One notable discovery made by Instagram user pweofficial_ showcases a background area filled with nostalgic WWE memorabilia, including the titular SmackDown Fist. Originating from the 2000s, this massive fist served as a visual centerpiece for the SmackDown entrance and offers players a chance to execute aerial maneuvers from its top, echoing The Rock’s iconic moments.

The Return of the SmackDown Fist

Originally debuting on August 16, 2001, the SmackDown Fist became a staple of the program until late 2008. Its legacy continued in various WWE video games, many of which allowed players to utilize it during matches. For instance, it made a comeback as an unlockable stage in WWE 2K23, which players could access by completing John Cena’s debut match against Kurt Angle in the 2K Showcase mode.

In addition to the SmackDown Fist, WWE 2K25’s backstage area features other wrestling memorabilia, including the original WrestleMania ring, a vibrant neon sign for Saturday Night’s Main Event, and a stone throne used by Triple H during WrestleMania 22 in 2006. With such rich references to wrestling lore, fans can look forward to immersing themselves in WWE 2K25 upon its release on March 14.
