WWE 2K25: Breaking Tradition with Lesnar’s Absence

  • The absence of Brock Lesnar in WWE 2K25 marks a break from a 14-year legacy.
  • Fans anticipated this decision, given Lesnar’s current association with WWE.
  • In WWE 2K24, Lesnar’s presence was limited, only available in Showcase Mode.

The highly anticipated WWE 2K25 will see the end of an era as Brock Lesnar will not be included in its roster. This marks the first time Lesnar hasn’t appeared in a mainline WWE video game since making his return in 2011 with WWE ’12. While the game promises a diverse lineup featuring hundreds of iconic and contemporary wrestlers, Lesnar’s absence is particularly significant.

Although the WWE 2K25 roster is robust, nearly 30 wrestlers from WWE 2K24 will not return for this installment. Reasons for these omissions range from performers transitioning to competitors like AEW to those released by WWE. Lesnar’s exclusion is especially noteworthy for longtime fans, as he has been a staple in every main series WWE game since his resurgence, even gracing the cover of WWE 2K17.

Why WWE 2K25 Won’t Include Brock Lesnar

Fans would likely not be shocked by Lesnar’s exclusion, as his visibility in WWE has been greatly reduced of late. Following his defeat to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam 2023, Lesnar has been absent from WWE programming. A significant lawsuit against former WWE executive Vince McMahon, alleging inappropriate behavior during Lesnar’s contract negotiations, has contributed to this situation. Although Lesnar still holds a WWE contract, his visibility in the media and games has been significantly curtailed.

Initial reports from January 2024 indicated that plans for Lesnar to enter the Royal Rumble match were scrapped due to the ensuing controversy. Additionally, his role in WWE 2K24 was notably limited as he was removed from the cover and relegated to being a playable character only in Showcase Mode. Thus, WWE 2K25 becomes the first main series game in 14 years to have no representation of Lesnar.

Interestingly, Lesnar’s absence isn’t the only tradition being disrupted; Shane McMahon’s decade-long streak in WWE video games, which initiated with WWE 2K16, also concludes with the arrival of WWE 2K25 in March.
