In the immersive world of Elden Ring: Nightreign, players can experience various Shifting Earth events that dramatically alter portions of Limveld’s landscape. These events present unique opportunities and challenges, making them crucial to your gameplay experience. Among them, The Crater stands out as the first significant event you will encounter.

The Crater reshapes the northern region of Limveld into a vast, treacherous volcanic area. Successfully navigating to the bottom before the Night’s Tide engulfs you grants substantial rewards. Below, we dive into the mechanics and strategies for surviving The Crater in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Understanding The Crater Event in Nightreign

The Crater represents just one of several Shifting Earth events that transform the landscape of Limveld. Engaging in these areas is vital, as they often yield exceptional gear and buffs that enhance your combat capabilities against formidable Nightlords.

Upon defeating Tricephalos (Gladius, Beast of Night), you will unlock The Crater during your subsequent runs. However, it’s important to note some matchmaking considerations when teaming up with friends.

Firstly, if The Crater event is currently underway, a notification will appear on the right-hand side of your matchmaking screen. Alternatively, you have the option to rest in the Hold to skip the event and return to the standard state of Limveld.

To enter Limveld with The Crater event active, every member in your party must have unlocked it. It is advisable for the player who activates the event to host the game session for an optimal experience.

Strategies for Navigating The Crater

Within The Crater, you will find a massive volcanic abyss that houses a remarkable altar at its base. This altar is pivotal as it allows players to transform any weapon into a Legendary Armament, eliminating any level requirements associated with that weapon.

Legendary Armaments are a coveted asset in Nightreign due to their rarity. Utilizing The Crater to secure one can significantly enhance your team’s offensive abilities.

However, preparation is critical for a successful venture into The Crater. It is highly recommended to schedule your exploration for Day 2, dedicating the entire day to this adventure. Should time permit, use any extra moments to explore nearby ruins before the Night’s Tide inevitably arrives. It’s vital to avoid getting trapped in The Crater as the tide advances.

As you descend into the volcanic depths, feel free to climb or leap from jagged rocks and pillars. Look for fallen pillars close to the church within The Crater as a pathway downward. After navigating these challenges, you’ll confront a mid-point boss known as The Fire Prelates.

Defeating The Fire Prelates will remove the yellow fog barrier, allowing you to delve even deeper into The Crater. Although you’ll encounter several Fire Chariots and Hands, it is advisable to bypass them to save time unless you’re keen on gathering Runes quickly.

Reaching the bottom of The Crater, you’ll find the altar—an unmissable and pivotal location. Ensuring combat readiness is essential, as approaching the altar will trigger a battle with a Magma Wyrm boss.

Upon vanquishing this formidable foe, engage with the altar (as shown below) to upgrade one of your weapons into a Legendary Armament and remove its level constraints.

After your upgrade, a Spectral Hawk will be available for interaction just to your right as you turn back from the altar, providing a means to ascend out of The Crater and return to the mainland of Limveld.
