In Stardew Valley, players can enjoy unique mechanics such as marriage to NPCs, having children, and building a life together. One standout feature is the ability to have offspring, allowing players to interact with their children and raise their heart levels.

Players can have a maximum of two children—one male and one female. This process relies on chance, as there are no alternative methods for having kids in the game. Below, you’ll find the essential steps to have children in Stardew Valley.

How to Increase Your Chances of Having Children in Stardew Valley

The primary requirement for having children is to be married to another character. We’ve covered a comprehensive guide on this, but the key prerequisites include being married for at least seven days and having a minimum of 10 hearts in the relationship with your spouse.

You can maintain or improve the heart level by regularly interacting with your spouse or giving them gifts. Next, it’s essential to construct a nursery in your Farmhouse. Inside this nursery, a crib must be placed and kept ready.

Once you’ve met these conditions, there’s approximately a 5% chance that your spouse will ask if you’d like to have kids. You will then have the option to accept or decline this offer. If you accept, a child will appear in the crib after 14 days, and the game’s algorithm will randomly determine the child’s gender.

For same-gender couples, the procedure remains the same, but instead of a child being born, an adoption will occur after 14 days. The only difference is that your spouse will notify you that the adoption process has begun, and after 14 days, the child will be present in the crib.

Children will progress through four developmental stages:

  • Stage 1: The child sleeps in the crib and cannot be interacted with.
  • Stage 2: The child stands up in the crib, allowing players to interact with them, such as tossing them in the air.
  • Stage 3: The child begins to crawl around the house.
  • Stage 4: The child becomes a toddler, able to be interacted with, and will roam around the house indefinitely at this stage.

Once the child reaches the final stage, you can then have a second child. The same prerequisites apply, with the only difference being that the second child’s gender will be the opposite of the first child’s gender.
