Sony Reports Record PlayStation Plus Engagement, But No Day-One First-Party Game Additions

Celebrating 15 Years of PlayStation Plus: Milestones and Future Directions
As PlayStation Plus approaches its 15th anniversary on June 29, 2025, it marks a significant milestone since its inception in 2010. In light of this upcoming celebration, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced various initiatives to honor the service’s legacy alongside revealing the lineup of monthly PS Plus Essential games for July.
Insights from Sony Executives
In an exclusive interview with Game File, Nick Maguire, the vice president of global services at Sony Interactive Entertainment, discussed both the achievements of the past 15 years and the current state of the service. Following remarks from Hideaki Nishino, the SIE president and CEO, about a noticeable increase in player interest in the Extra and Premium tiers, Maguire confirmed, stating, “Engagement in Plus has never been higher than it is right now.”This surge in engagement is attributed largely to the restructuring of the service introduced in 2022.
Restructuring and Engagement Growth
Maguire elaborated on the transition from the traditional PS Plus model to a tiered system, noting that the shift “surpassed our expectations.”He emphasized, “It’s really given us a new way to reach audiences with these games and provided new value to partners looking to attract players to their titles. We’re seeing a highly positive engagement, with many users returning month after month to explore the game catalog.”
Addressing the topic of price increases, Maguire opted not to focused on that aspect directly. Instead, he expressed Sony’s commitment to enhancing the Plus service, stating, “We want to invest more in Plus to bring greater value to our users. We’re witnessing significant growth in both the Extra and Premium tiers.”
Balancing Game Offerings
When asked about the recent price adjustments, Nishino mentioned they are part of Sony’s strategy to “increase the value we bring to players.”This approach seems successful, as the rising engagement in the Extra and Premium tiers indicates that subscriber numbers remain stable, despite the hikes.
On another significant note, Maguire reinforced that Sony does not plan to include first-party titles developed by PlayStation Studios in the PlayStation Plus lineup on their launch day. However, he mentioned a continued focus on incorporating select third-party games at launch, exemplified by the recent addition of FBC: Firebreak to the service.
Strategic Game Releases
Despite the lack of first-party day-and-date releases, Maguire explained, “Our strategy focuses on identifying several independent titles for simultaneous release to complement our offerings of older games, typically ones that are 12 to 18 months old.”He indicated that should there be an abundance of quality independent games, Sony would not hesitate to include more than just a handful at a time.
Player Feedback and Response
Maguire refrained from speculating on whether including multiplayer titles like Concord in the service would offer a significant advantage. However, he acknowledged that PlayStation Plus has proven effective at introducing new players to various franchises.“There’s always a right moment for any game to join Plus, particularly when it aims to reach a broader audience, ”he remarked.
Addressing Concerns About Game Removals
In the face of ongoing player concerns regarding the removal of games from the catalog, Maguire asserted that while they are continuously refreshing the game selections, sometimes it necessitates removing titles, including older first-party offerings.“We have 80 collections across the catalog, and we aim to keep things interesting and dynamic, ”he explained, hinting at a strategy of balancing old and new titles to engage players.
Future Perspectives on Subscription Services
As the landscape of subscription services evolves—from PlayStation Plus to alternatives like Xbox Game Pass and Netflix—game offerings frequently change. Yet, many players express confusion over the removal of PlayStation’s first-party titles, especially given their unique accessibility challenges.
Maguire assures players that user feedback is valued.“I actively read comments left on PS Plus-related posts, as they provide valuable insights into player sentiments, which can inform our future strategies, ”he said.
As PlayStation Plus prepares to celebrate its anniversary, Maguire reiterated their pride in the service’s accomplishments and their excitement in witnessing continued player engagement.
