Nintendo has officially announced that its Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers program will not extend to games exclusive to the upcoming Switch 2 console. This voucher system, which debuted in 2019, enables subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online to buy two vouchers that can be redeemed for specific digital titles at a discounted rate. Games such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Paper Mario, and Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have previously been available under this program, offering players a cost-effective way to enjoy popular titles.

This program is exclusively available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, allowing the purchase of two vouchers for £84/$100. Each voucher can be exchanged for a designated first-party digital game, which provides significant savings for those wanting to acquire two major titles. However, it is important to note that this benefit requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership—either individual or family plan. Should the membership lapse prior to the voucher’s use, it can still be redeemed if the subscription is reactivated before the voucher expires.

Nintendo Affirms Vouchers Will Not Work for Switch 2 Exclusives

In a recent update on the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers website, the company made it clear that “Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be redeemed for Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games.”This concise statement indicates that the voucher system will continue to apply for existing Switch titles. Notable upcoming releases that will be included are Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. However, it is essential to note that anticipated titles like Mario Kart 9, if deemed a Switch 2 exclusive, will not qualify for voucher redemption.

While the policy explicitly refers to “Switch 2 exclusives, ”there is ongoing speculation regarding the eligibility of cross-platform games. Titles such as Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are currently categorized as Switch 1 releases, which hints that some games playable on both consoles may still be eligible for vouchers, contingent upon their cross-generation availability.

Recent developments reveal additional concerns for Nintendo aficionados. Just weeks prior to this announcement, it was reported that subscription prices for Nintendo Switch Online are increasing across various regions, particularly in Latin America. Countries such as Brazil are experiencing notable price hikes, with the individual NSO plan escalating by 20% to reach R$120 (approximately USD $20).Meanwhile, the NSO + Expansion Pack membership sees a 14% increase, and the Family membership is affected the most, with a 25% rise in pricing.

On a more positive note, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the Switch 2 will support backward compatibility, allowing users to play their existing Switch software on the new console. Furukawa stated, “Switch software will also be playable on the successor to the Nintendo Switch, ”a feature that could significantly enhance early adoption and user satisfaction, as it enables players to retain their Nintendo libraries without needing to purchase games anew.
