Stardew Valley invites players to immerse themselves in a rural lifestyle, teaching them to gather and cultivate resources found throughout its diverse landscape. From Cindersap Forest to the Beach and Calico Desert, each region presents unique opportunities for foraging and building materials.

One particularly elusive area within Stardew Valley, known as the Secret Woods, can be a bit challenging to reach. Located in the northwestern corner of the woods, south of your farm, players will spot a fallen log obstructing the path. This log is the gateway to the Secret Woods, a hidden gem that offers various resources. Here’s a handy guide on how to access this intriguing area.

As of January 17, 2025, this guide has been revised to include any recent developments in the game, making it more relevant for players. Let’s delve into how to make the most of your adventures in the Secret Woods!

Accessing the Secret Woods

To enter the Secret Woods, players must first upgrade their axe to Steel or better. This upgrade allows them to chop the large log blocking the pathway in the Cindersap Forest, granting access to the hidden area.

Monstrous Encounters

Within the confines of the Secret Woods, players may encounter a few foes. Fortunately, these threats are relatively mild—mainly blue and green slimes. Although these creatures do not pose a significant danger, it is wise to carry a sword to navigate the area efficiently and avoid interruptions from slime attacks. Alternatively, players equipped with the Slime Charmer Ring can stroll past the slimes unharmed.

Resource Gathering in the Secret Woods

The Secret Woods may be small, but it is a treasure trove of valuable items:

Collecting Hardwood

One of the primary resources available in the Secret Woods is hardwood. Players can find six large stumps that regenerate each day. Each stump produces two pieces of hardwood, allowing for a maximum collection of 12 hardwood daily. This makes the Secret Woods an excellent location for harvesting hardwood prior to unlocking Ginger Island, where mahogany trees also yield this precious material.

Foraging Opportunities

The lush ecosystem of the Secret Woods supports a variety of forageable items, including seasonal fruits, mushrooms, and other wild edibles. During summer, players can find grapes and sweet peas, while holly appears in winter. Additionally, numerous berry bushes enable the gathering of Salmonberries in spring and Blackberries in fall.

Mushroom hunters will also appreciate the Common and Red mushrooms present here, alongside the rarer Chanterelle and Morel species that can be found during their respective seasons. Notably, the Secret Woods is the only location to forage for Fiddlehead Ferns, so visit during the summer to collect them.

Fishing in the Secret Woods

To the left of the Secret Woods, a tranquil pond awaits eager anglers. Here, players may catch three types of fish: Carp, Woodskip, and Catfish. All three species can be fished year-round, except for Catfish, which only emerges on rainy days.

The Enigmatic Old Master Cannoli

Near the pond in the Secret Woods, players will notice an ancient stone statue. Interacting with it reveals a plaque inscribed with the following:

“–Old Master Cannoli– …Still searching for that sweetest taste…”

To satisfy Old Master Cannoli’s sweet cravings, players must bring him a Sweet Gem Berry. These can be cultivated from Rare Seeds available at the Traveling Cart. Presenting the berry to the statue will cause its eyes to glow red and reward the player with a Stardrop.

Deciphering Secret Note #23

While exploring the game, players can unlock Secret Notes, one of which is #23. It contains the message:

“If yoo can can reed dis…come to seecrit wudz. Pleez bring may-pal serrup.”

Observing the instructions will lead players back to the Secret Woods with a jug of maple syrup. Upon arrival, a fascinating cutscene unfolds where a bear drinks the syrup. In gratitude, the bear grants players Bear’s Wisdom, permanently tripling the sell price of Salmonberries and Blackberries.

If players accidentally misplace a unique item they have previously unlocked, a quirky crow will appear in the Secret Woods the next day, near Old Master Cannoli’s statue. This crow allows players to recover lost items for a fee of 10,000g. Recoverable items include:

  • Museum artifacts, like the Sloth Skeleton pieces
  • Special items obtained from spouse heart events
  • One-time rewards for completing Special Orders, such as the Sewing Machine
  • Other unique rewards, including the Stardew Valley Hero Trophy and the Statue of True Perfection
