Roblox Introduces IARC Age Ratings for Experiences, In-Game Chat Age Verification Set for 2025

Roblox Strengthens Safety Measures with New Age Rating System
Roblox has announced a significant collaboration with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to overhaul its maturity rating framework, moving away from its current system to one that aligns with globally recognized video game age ratings. These new ratings, which include ESRB, PEGI, GRAC, and USK, will be implemented across the platform, referred to as ‘experiences’ by Roblox. As part of this initiative, the company plans to mandate age verification for players wishing to access in-game chat functionality by the end of 2025.
Regional Rating Adaptations
In North America, players will be presented with ESRB ratings, while users in Europe and the United Kingdom will see PEGI ratings. Germany will adopt the USK ratings, and South Korean players will encounter GRAC ratings. This transition not only enhances transparency for parents but also aligns Roblox with industry standards in safeguarding children online.
Addressing Safety Concerns
This move is part of a broader effort by Roblox to tackle the persistent problem of adult predators exploiting the platform to target minors, an issue that has been documented extensively over the years. Recently, Louisiana’s Attorney General, Liz Murril, filed a lawsuit against Roblox, citing failures in implementing sufficient safety measures to protect children. Roblox’s response characterized these claims as “erroneous, ”reflecting their confidence in existing safety protocols.
Expert Insights on New Safety Ratings
Patricia Vance, president of the ESRB and chairperson of IARC, emphasized the importance of familiar and trusted age ratings for families engaging with Roblox. She stated, “The globally streamlined process will provide Roblox creators with an efficient and proven process for obtaining age and content ratings, while informing parents of what their kids may experience before they play, ”as quoted in a report by GamesIndustry. Biz.

Innovative Age Verification Techniques
The new age verification process will involve a combination of ID checks, parental consent, and advanced facial age estimation technology. According to Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, this shift represents a significant upgrade from relying solely on user-generated information when creating accounts.
Roblox’s Commitment to Child Safety
Kaufman mentioned that Roblox had implemented “over 100 safety initiatives”since the beginning of the year, reinforcing a robust foundation of existing safety measures. However, recent reports have highlighted a need for further action. In 2023, Bloomberg reported more than 13, 000 incidents of child exploitation on the platform, illustrating the ongoing challenges Roblox faces in ensuring a safe environment for its young users.
This strategic shift, alongside enhanced technology and safety practices, positions Roblox as a more trustworthy environment for families and aims to curtail the risks associated with online interaction.
