Pearl Abyss May Be Looking to Sell CCP Games

In a significant move within the gaming industry, South Korean developer Pearl Abyss, renowned for its popular title Black Desert, completed a $425 million acquisition of CCP Games, the creators of the acclaimed MMORPG EVE Online, on September 6, 2018. This acquisition aimed to enhance the gaming portfolio of Pearl Abyss.

However, as reported by Korean outlet MTN, there are indications that Pearl Abyss may be reconsidering its investment in CCP Games. The report suggests that Pearl Abyss has reached out to various gaming companies to explore their interest in acquiring CCP Games.

Challenges in CCP Games’ Development Journey

Although concrete sales figures for CCP’s games remain undisclosed, the studio has faced numerous challenges over the years, leading to a series of setbacks both before and after the acquisition. Over its nearly three decades of operation, CCP has canceled multiple projects, including:

  • World of Darkness MMO
  • Project Legion
  • EVE: The Second Genesis
  • Project Nova

Additionally, earlier aspirations in the Virtual Reality realm, with titles like EVE: Valkyrie, Gunjack, Gunjack 2: End of Shift, and Sparc, were abandoned as the market failed to expand as anticipated.

Current Developments at CCP Games

Recently, CCP launched EVE: Frontier, a survival-themed spin-off of EVE Online, under a ‘Founder Access’ model. Concerns have arisen about whether Pearl Abyss is satisfied with the direction of Frontier and another project, Vanguard, which aims to establish a shooter game tied to the extensive lore of EVE Online.

Focus on Core Projects

According to the MTN report, Pearl Abyss may be eager to divest from CCP Games to concentrate on its own upcoming titles, such as Crimson Desert and DokeV. Interestingly, this source previously hinted at a tentative internal release date for Crimson Desert, although Pearl Abyss has only referenced formal announcements through its own channels.

As developments unfold, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates should Pearl Abyss offer any insights or comments regarding these reports. Stay tuned for further details!
