For several years, this innovative service thrived without serious competition, earning its status as the “best deal in gaming”among players eager to explore diverse video game experiences.
However, the competitive environment changed dramatically in June 2022 when PlayStation Plus unveiled a revamped three-tier system. This new structure mirrored the offerings of Xbox Game Pass, introducing PS Plus Extra, which features an extensive library of both first-party and third-party games, alongside PS Plus Premium, which met the long-held demand for backwards compatibility. Since then, Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus have engaged in a subtle rivalry, striving to capture the attention and loyalty of gamers. This ongoing competition has recently intensified, marked by significant shifts in both services’ game line-ups.
PS Plus’ January Turnaround: A Challenge for Xbox Game Pass
PlayStation Plus Experiences a Challenging Start
Despite being the most affordable option at $80 annually, PS Plus Essential comes with high expectations from subscribers. This tier offers three monthly titles along with access to online gaming. Recently, PS Plus Essential had notable offerings, including games like Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged and Ghostwire: Tokyo. However, January 2025 has been disappointing, with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League serving as the prominent title in a lackluster line-up. This game, having suffered from poor reception, seems like a last-minute inclusion, especially since it’s only now received its final update.
While other titles such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe are solid, they fail to compensate for the disappointment surrounding the January headliner.
PS Plus’ Extra and Premium Line-Up Redeems Itself
In stark contrast, PlayStation Plus swiftly recovered its momentum through the Extra and Premium tiers. January 2025’s line-up prominently features God of War Ragnarok, a highly acclaimed first-party title, marking a rare and significant addition to PS Plus. This blockbuster is accompanied by other excellent games like Sayonara Wild Hearts and Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, as well as notable classics available to Premium subscribers.
A Call to Action for Xbox Game Pass
As 2025 unfolds, Xbox Game Pass has had a relatively quiet start, debuting just three new titles. However, noteworthy releases like Sniper Elite: Resistance, Eternal Strands, and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector are set to arrive on launch day. Despite this, they face a challenging path to overshadow the prestige of God of War Ragnarok.
To maintain its competitive edge, Xbox Game Pass must elevate its offerings in February. Anticipated titles such as Obsidian’s Avowed are eagerly awaited, but a more robust slate of releases will be essential to captivate gamers in an increasingly dynamic market.
