At the recent CES 2025 event, Genki’s CEO, Eddie Tsai, unveiled exciting information about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, confirming numerous ongoing speculations surrounding the device. This much-anticipated gaming console has been the subject of rumors for several months; however, significant revelations emerged at CES, where Genki showcased a meticulously crafted 3D-printed mockup of the Switch 2.

The primary aim of this showcase was to display accessories that are currently under development for the next-generation console. Attendees were granted exclusive access to the mockup, allowing for a detailed examination of its features. Genki asserted that this model was an authentic representation of the Switch 2, allegedly based on a unit acquired from the black market. Among its standout features were a size increase that aligns it more closely with the Valve Steam Deck, innovative magnetic Joy-Cons, an additional USB-C port, and an enigmatic button marked “C.”

During an interview with The Verge, Tsai addressed various questions regarding the Switch 2 mockup. He confirmed the magnetic design of the Joy-Cons, stating that they can be detached through a prominent button on each controller, which releases a pin that disengages them from the console. Despite this innovative switch from the standard sliding rails to magnetism, Tsai emphasized that the Joy-Cons remain securely attached during gameplay. Additionally, he noted that the SL and SR buttons on each Joy-Con are also magnetic, enhancing their functionality and design.

Unveiling More Features of the Switch 2

Further discussions revealed additional insights about the Switch 2’s design. Tsai shared that each Joy-Con will incorporate an optical sensor situated within its mounting channel. This development hints at the possibility of a new accessory that could enable the Joy-Con to function akin to a mouse, potentially transforming gameplay dynamics. Recent leaks of Switch 2 images appear to corroborate the existence of these optical sensors, which could pave the way for innovative gaming experiences.

Moreover, Genki mentioned intriguing aspects regarding the console’s dimensions. Although the Switch 2 will possess a greater height and length, it is still streamlined enough to fit within the existing Nintendo Switch dock. However, due to specific indentations in the design, the new console will not be able to fully utilize the old dock. As for the newly unveiled “C” button and the extra USB-C port, Genki has yet to disclose any definitive information about their functionality.
