US Video Game Sales Surge in May 2025: Elden Ring Takes the Lead
According to Mat Piscatella, executive director and analyst at Circana, the May 2025 video game sales data for the United States has unveiled significant trends, particularly with the remarkable success of Elden Ring: Nightreign. This title not only secured its place as the top-selling game in the US but also gained recognition as one of the leading titles in Newzoo’s global report for the same period.
Top Games of May 2025
Elden Ring: Nightreign dominated the premium game sales charts, showcasing its universal appeal across multiple platforms. Following closely was DOOM: The Dark Ages in second place, while Forza Horizon 5 captured third place, buoyed by its recent launch on the PS5. After an impressive performance in April 2025, the Oblivion Remastered title settled in fourth, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 maintained its hold on fifth place.
Remarkable Re-Entry of Star Wars: Battlefront 2
A noteworthy highlight in this month’s sales data was the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 resurgence, which dramatically climbed from the 135th position to number 12. It positioned itself just behind Assassin’s Creed Shadows at 11, while maintaining a slim lead over Split Fiction, which ranked 13th.

Year-to-Date Sales Insights
Elden Ring: Nightreign‘s success in May positions it among the best-selling games in the US for 2025, although it narrowly missed the top 10, landing at number 11. In comparison, DOOM: The Dark Ages is further back in the rankings at 16. The most significant shift in year-to-date sales saw The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered leapfrog over Assassin’s Creed Shadows to claim the second spot, with Shadows now in third place. Currently, Monster Hunter Wilds holds the title of the best-selling game of the year in the US.
Hardware Sales Trends
On the hardware front, the PlayStation 5 continued to be the leading console in sales for May 2025. However, it is noteworthy that overall spending on video game hardware declined by 13% compared to the previous year. Upcoming reports, particularly for June 2025, will be crucial in evaluating the impact of the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 launch on hardware expenditures.
Overall Industry Growth and Future Outlook
Despite some declines in hardware spending, May 2025 marked a month of growth for the video game industry in the US, with a modest increase of 1% in overall spending compared to May 2024. This presents a positive view for the industry; however, Mat Piscatella has cautioned that economic factors such as tariffs and increasing costs of essential goods could lead to a decrease in consumer spending on video games in the upcoming months.
