During the Women-Led Games 2025 Summer Showcase—part of the Summer Game Fest 2025—Kitten Cup Studio, in collaboration with publisher Big Blue Sky Games, released a captivating new trailer for their highly anticipated cozy narrative puzzle game, Capy Castaway.

A Heartwarming Adventure Begins

The narrative centers around Capy, an adventurous capybara who finds themselves separated from their family following a flood at their home zoo. After regaining consciousness, Capy meets a friendly crow named Corvi, and together, they embark on a quest to reunite with Capy’s parents.

Inspiration Behind Capy Castaway

Creative insights for Capy Castaway stem from the bustling city of Toronto and the true tale of Bonnie and Clyde—the runaway capybaras from the High Park Zoo in 2016. Saffron Bolduc-Chong, the chief executive officer and creative director at Kitten Cup Studio, expressed the game’s personal roots, stating:

“Capy Castaway is inspired by our hometown of Toronto and the true story of Bonnie and Clyde – the runaway capybaras from Toronto’s High Park Zoo in 2016.”

Local Talent and Original Soundtrack

Adding to the local flavor, the game features an original soundtrack crafted by Toronto’s own Mark Sparling, renowned for his work on the indie classic A Short Hike. This collaboration not only highlights the musical diversity of Toronto but also enhances the immersive experience of the game.

Creative Gameplay Mechanics

In terms of gameplay, Capy Castaway emphasizes joy and intuition. Bolduc-Chong elaborated on the development process, noting:

“The game is heavily inspired by familiar places and things that bring us joy, and we wanted to capture a sort of intuitive playfulness. When we’re playing through the game and think, ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be fun if we could just wear this yuzu on our heads?’ and then we try it out.”

This whimsical approach has led to fun gameplay mechanics, such as the ability to stack multiple yuzus on Capy’s head, adding a layer of humor and delight to the adventure.
