Comprehensive Guide and Walkthrough for The Alters Prologue

The Alters is a survival game where adapting to your environment is crucial—failure to do so can have dire consequences. After an unfortunate crash landing on a desolate, mysterious planet, players quickly discover they are the sole survivors of their crew, setting the stage for a harrowing journey filled with moral dilemmas and the mysterious substance known as Rapidium.
This game doesn’t shy away from challenging scenarios, especially as you progress beyond the easier prologue. To assist you in your initial foray into this unfamiliar world, we present a comprehensive guide to help you navigate through the early stages of The Alters.
Finding Your Way to the Base
Your adventure begins on the shore, where your first task is to traverse the path ahead towards your crew’s base. However, upon reaching the location of your comrades, you will discover that every one of them has perished in their pods before the crash.
As you uncover the grim fate of your crew, a radiation storm will force you to hasten your pace toward safety. It’s crucial to reach the base quickly to avoid unnecessary frustration.
Upon entering the base, the first day begins. Your immediate objective is to locate the Communications Room.
Exploring the Base

Your initial contact will be with an unnamed entity who warns you about the imminent danger posed by the approaching sun. This ominous message serves as a crucial motivation for your survival.
This signal sets off a sequence of events that will lead you deeper into the base as you familiarize yourself with its layout. Your first stop should be the Captain’s Quarters, where a cursory glance at the logs is necessary before heading to bed, as you cannot exit the airlock without resting.
The following day, venture outside to gather resources. Just outside, you will notice glowing red ore—this is known as a shallow Metal deposit. Depleting this resource is essential for completing your initial task, titled The Fundamentals.
While outside, take a moment to explore your surroundings. You can discover cargo drops containing personal items belonging to Jan—these may not seem significant initially, but they will be valuable later.
Here is a summary of the cargo drop locations you should collect during the prologue:

Once you’ve gathered these items, head back inside. You will be directed to the Command Center, a module that enables you to create new structures and rearrange rooms, much like in Fallout Shelter.
Utilizing your Metals, proceed to construct a Workshop. If feasible, venture back outside before the radiation curfew begins.
Establishing Your Outpost

Your next task revolves around gathering Organic materials. Unlike Metals, Organics will require mining as they are not found in shallow deposits within the tutorial area.
Before proceeding to the designated area, keep an eye out for visual distortions, which indicate the presence of a resource called Rapidium. Look on a slope to discover a shallow deposit of this valuable material, which you should exploit immediately.
After collecting Rapidium, navigate to the location marked on your map filled with blue smoke—this signifies a possible source of Organics. To set up your Mining Outpost, equip your scanner and strategically place five scanner pylons in a pentagon formation as large as possible.
Be mindful of the distance between pylons, which should not exceed 5 meters for efficiency. The objective is to examine the planetary crust and identify the reddest areas, indicating optimal locations for mining.
You can also utilize the scanner’s wave function to pinpoint the most promising mining area. Once identified, place your Mining Outpost, ensuring you use larger pylons to connect it to the base for power.
This setup will not only facilitate the extraction of Organics but also enable fast travel between the base and the Outpost. Should you need to rest, do so; however, if time allows, fast travel back to the Outpost for more resource gathering.
Creating New Alters
CloseThe Womb.
This incubation chamber allows you to cultivate new Alters. Head to your Workshop to construct this module. Once completed, you can utilize your Rapidium to create “Molly The Sheep, ”a nod to Dolly the Sheep, by giving her a little affection to unlock the achievement titled Baa.
Next, visit the Kitchen Module to prepare Mush meals with your Organic stock. It’s prudent to maintain a consistent supply of Mush—aim for at least ten, or adjust according to your strategy.
After preparing the meals, return to the Communications Room to receive instructions on starting the base’s engine. However, don’t be surprised if the engine repeatedly stalls. If this occurs twice, revisit the Communications Room.
This interaction grants access to the Quantum Computer, where you can review your Mind Records. Once this is accomplished, head back to the Communications Room to initiate the branching procedure, allowing you to create the Alter known as Jan Technician with the Rapidium you previously collected.
Jan Technician is unique, as he will engage you in conversation straight away. Handle the dialogue carefully to avoid offense; recommended responses are:
- ‘Relax, you’re in a lab.’
- ‘I’m Jan Dolski.’
- ‘Yes, it is.’
- ‘Yes, you could say that.’
- ‘I wouldn’t wake you up.’
Following this interaction, you’re close to finishing your prologue journey.
Final Preparations Before Departure
Close
To conclude the prologue, your final task is to gather enough Organics to power the engine and get the base operational. The amount needed will depend on the modules and materials you’ve accumulated, for instance, my requirement was 200 Organics.
If you’ve efficiently managed your tasks, you’ll have a few days to spare before the sun engulfs you. Here are some additional tasks to complete before transitioning into Act One:
- Fill your Organics Reserve completely.
- Create a Pylon kit in the Workshop for efficient Outpost setups in the next act.
- If feasible, construct an extra Small Storage module to ease resources management.
- Collect all dispersed Metal reserves in the area.
- Optimize the layout of your base for comfort and accessibility.
- Gather Organics and prepare a substantial supply of Mush meals during the downtime.
Once you’re adequately prepared, activate the engines to commence your first journey, paving the way for the challenges that lie ahead in the ensuing acts.
Before departing, you will be asked whether to retrieve your Outposts and Pylons from the planet’s surface. Always opt to take them, as failing to do so could place you at a disadvantage in Act One.
