Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 focuses predominantly on combat, emphasizing how players can effectively collaborate with their party members. To provide a refreshing break from the continuous action of battling Nevrons, the game introduces intriguing puzzles that challenge players intellectually.

One such puzzle is located in the Esoteric Ruins, offering a unique diversion from the relentless combat. This guide will walk you through the solution I found most intuitive within this puzzle.

In this guide, we will explore the puzzle’s location, its mechanics, and the rewards for engaging with it. If you’re on the quest for every achievement within the game, completing this section is essential.

Locating the Esoteric Ruins Puzzle

The Esoteric Ruins can be found to the west of Old Lumiere. Ensure that you are in Act II and have passed through Monoco Station for access.

After entering, follow the pathway until you encounter a small, floating blue orb in a prominent area. Interacting with this orb will initiate an entertaining dialogue which kicks off the Nevron quest.

Navigate towards the Expedition flag at the rear of the area and use the handholds to ascend. Continue along the path until you arrive at the Paint Cage, which reveals the maze.

Solving the Puzzle

Understanding the maze’s mechanics isn’t overly complex, once you grasp the rules. While they may appear straightforward, lack of insight may lead to confusion.

Understanding the Puzzle Rules

Each orb positioned at the center of a maze cell influences the pathways associated with that specific cell. Generally, these orbs will either open or close one or two pathways, rather than affecting all possibilities.

To manipulate a doorway, shoot the orb—closing the path will cause it to open and vice versa. Keep a sharp eye on which pathways are accessible, as a misstep could place you in a challenging position for the remainder of the puzzle.

If you observe closely, you’ll notice lines extending from the orbs; these indicate which paths the orb opens or closes.

Navigating the Puzzle

While several solutions may exist, this guide outlines a pathway that proved effective for me after some experimentation with the mechanics.

Utilizing visual aids can greatly assist your understanding of the maze. Each cell within the maze is numbered, commencing from the bottom left and extending horizontally across.

  1. Shoot the first orb in cell 2.
  2. Shoot the orb in cell 3.
  3. Move to cell 1.
  4. Shoot the orb in cell 1.
  5. Move to cell 4.
  6. Shoot the orb in cell 4 twice.
  7. Move to cell 6.
  8. Shoot the orb in cell 6.
  9. Shoot the orb in cell 3.
  10. Move to cell 3.
  11. Shoot the orb in cell 2.
  12. Return to cell 6.
  13. Shoot the orb in cell 6.
  14. Shoot the orb in cell 5.
  15. Proceed up towards cell 9, where the exit should now be revealed.

Upon completion, you’ll discover several items available for collection, including the essential Wood Boards.

Rewards from the Esoteric Ruins Puzzle

After acquiring the Wood Boards, return to the little blue orb and present your findings. In doing so, the orb will transform into its true form, a Portier.

Completing this quest will yield:

  • X2

If you opt to engage the Portier, additional rewards are available:

  • X3

Having conquered the Esoteric Ruins, you can now venture forth to face the Nevrons in combat. If you tackle this prior to entering Old Lumiere, you’ll have time to prepare for your upcoming battle against Renoir.
