Baldur’s Gate 3 presents players with a rich array of character customization options, ranging from an elaborate character creation suite to a plethora of classes and subclasses. Additionally, players can engage in various quests which introduce character modifications that can have either temporary or permanent effects on their gameplay experience.

One notable method of customization is tied to a hilarious and somewhat unlucky storyteller known as Volo. As one of the intriguing non-playable characters, Volo offers assistance in the quest to eliminate a mind-controlling parasite. However, players may want to think twice before placing trust in someone with a penchant for embellishment. Below is an overview of everything players should know regarding Volo and his Ersatz Eye effect in the game.

Updated January 17, 2025, by Christopher Norman Worcester: As we step into 2025, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to thrive with new players discovering its immersive gameplay. Among the game’s captivating interactions is the acquisition of Volo’s Ersatz Eye, which unlocks the ability to ‘See Invisibility.’ This guide aims to provide the latest information and includes a new video tutorial on how to obtain See Invisibility from Volo’s Eye in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Locating Volo in Baldur’s Gate 3

Players can first encounter Volo in the Druid Grove, where he can be seen engaging with a bear while documenting goblin activities in the area. During this interaction, he expresses his concerns over the goblins’ fixation on the Absolute and announces his intent to investigate the goblin camp for further insights to enrich his tale.

Interestingly, players do not need to meet Volo in the Druid Grove to commence his quest; upon reaching the Goblin Camp, they can interact with him directly and assist in his rescue.

Step-by-Step Rescue Volo Guide – Baldur’s Gate 3

Players can locate Volo again at the Goblin Camp, situated to the west of the Blighted Village. Here, he is held captive and coerced into entertaining goblins with dubious poetry. As players approach, Volo implores them to rescue him, thus triggering the quest titled “Rescue Volo.”

The next step involves heading north towards the Shattered Sanctum. Players will encounter a goblin named Warrior Trinzas. If Sazza, the goblin, accompanies the party, they can ease their way past Trinzas after a brief cutscene. Otherwise, players will have to either persuade Trinzas or engage her and her guards in combat for passage.

Upon navigating beyond Trinzas, players will find the True Soul Gut addressing a gathering of followers. They should ascend the stairs immediately to the right after entering the room, not the staircase past Gut, to discover goblin torture chambers. Continuing upwards, players will find Volo confined in a cage on the right side of the third chamber, under the watch of a goblin named Gribbo.

To rescue Volo, players can either persuade Gribbo to relinquish the key to the cage or defeat her in combat to acquire it as loot. Regardless of the method chosen, freeing Volo allows players to converse with him and invite him to their camp, where further discussions about the mind flayer parasite will ensue.

Note that Volo may not appear in the player’s camp immediately; multiple Long Rests may be required before he arrives.

Discovering Volo at Your Camp:

Once back at their camp, players can engage in conversation with Volo, who will reside there and offer to address the mind flayer parasite issue. He will require time to conduct research, necessitating a Long Rest before players can move forward.

After Volo completes his research, players will have the opportunity to let him attempt to remove the parasite. This decision is optional but crucial, as it will result in a permanent alteration of the chosen character’s appearance.

Is It Wise to Let Volo Operate in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Players face the decision of permitting Volo to perform the surgery, which involves him extracting the parasite through a rather aggressive method targeting the right eye. This procedure can be gruesome, potentially leading to significant damage and the removal of the eye.

It’s worth noting that the auditory representation of the procedure may be unsettling for some players, making them opt to skip this cutscene. Players can also change their mind mid-surgery and halt the process, resulting in a temporary Bleeding Eye debuff that heals quickly.

Volo is willing to perform this surgery on any selected party member, but he only does so once. Players should approach him with the party member they wish to undergo the procedure.

Evaluating Volo’s Ersatz Eye – Baldur’s Gate 3

True to expectations, Volo’s attempt to remove the parasite from the player’s eye fails, but it results in an eye socket that he compensates for by providing Volo’s Ersatz Eye.

This Ersatz Eye replaces the player’s right eye completely, leading to a permanent visual change that is not reversible, similar to the effects of hidden helmets. Players should consider this alteration seriously if maintaining the original appearance of their character is important to them.

Aside from its visual transformation, Volo’s Ersatz Eye confers a significant passive ability: the capacity to see invisible creatures within a nine-meter radius. This effect mirrors that of Level 2 Divination spell, See Invisibility, but functions continuously at no expense to the player. Opponents will still have a chance to evade detection, yet this buff can be extremely useful during gameplay.

It’s essential to note that a player cannot simultaneously possess both Volo’s Ersatz Eye and Hag’s Eye from Auntie Ethel. Although there may not be a substantial issue here, especially as the disadvantages of the Hag’s Eye are generally not worth it, this is a noteworthy consideration if the player has already sacrificed their eye.

Killing Volo at the camp is a possible way to obtain his Ersatz Eye, but this approach is strongly discouraged. Allowing Volo to remain alive and providing Merchant services enriches the camp experience, presenting a valuable resource that players would not want to lose.
