Nintendo Announces Plans to Prevent Resellers from Disrupting Nintendo Switch 2 Launch

As anticipation builds for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release, consumers are expressing concerns about the console’s availability. The gaming industry has faced a surge in shortages recently, leading to inflated prices and frustration among buyers and sellers. This dilemma stems not only from supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic but also from resellers hoarding inventory to capitalize on demand. Given the hype surrounding the Switch 2, it is poised to attract a similar scalping strategy; however, Nintendo is taking steps to mitigate this issue.
In a recent briefing with Japanese media, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, addressed these growing concerns. Drawing on lessons from previous console launches, he emphasized that the company is diligently preparing to thwart scalpers and thus prevent inflated resale prices. As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Furukawa assured fans: “We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date. We are making preparations.”
Strategic Planning for the Nintendo Switch 2 Launch
Commitment to Meeting Consumer Demand
The overwhelming enthusiasm surrounding the Switch 2’s reveal is evident from its record-breaking initial impressions, reflecting the widespread eagerness among fans to get their hands on the new device. Reports hinting at earlier plans for a 2024 release indicate that Nintendo strategically postponed the launch to 2025. This delay aims to ensure adequate inventory levels for both the console and its accompanying games, thereby minimizing opportunities for scalpers to exploit shortages.
“As a countermeasure against resale, we believe that the most important thing is to produce a sufficient number to meet customer demand, and this idea has not changed since last year.”- Shuntaro Furukawa
By maintaining robust stock levels, Nintendo aims to discourage scalpers from inflating prices beyond retail norms. Furthermore, Furukawa indicated that the company is actively exploring additional methods, compliant with local laws, to further deter reselling practices.
