NVIDIA DLSS 4: A Revolutionary Upgrade in Upscaling Technology

NVIDIA’s latest iteration of Deep Learning Super Sampling, DLSS 4, is emerging as a substantial enhancement over its predecessor. The standout feature of this upgrade is its Performance preset, which, as demonstrated in recent tests, rivals and often surpasses the Quality preset of DLSS 3.8 in terms of image fidelity and detail.

In-Depth Video Comparisons Highlight Performance Improvements

A detailed comparison video from MxBenchmarkPC showcases the capabilities of DLSS 4 through a series of popular games, including Cyberpunk 2077, Alan Wake 2, STALKER 2, God of War Ragnarok, and Horizon Forbidden West. Each game was tested at a 1440p resolution, putting the Performance setting of DLSS 4 against the Quality setting of DLSS 3.8.

The results are striking, particularly highlighted in God of War Ragnarok at the 7:10 mark, where the Draupnir Spear exhibits significantly sharper details compared to its DLSS 3.8 counterpart. This showcases how DLSS 4 can effectively enhance visuals, even when rendering from a lower resolution.

Innovations Driving Image Quality and Performance

The improvements in NVIDIA DLSS 4 stem from its advanced Transformer model, which is compatible with all NVIDIA RTX GPUs. This model revolutionizes how images are upscaled, providing superior quality compared to earlier versions. However, it’s worth noting that the new Multi Frame Generation feature will only be accessible to RTX 50 series cards.

This technology promises a significant performance boost, even in graphically intensive scenarios, such as Cyberpunk 2077. In demonstrations, an RTX 5080 was able to achieve frame rates exceeding 120 FPS at 4K resolution with path tracing enabled, thanks to the cutting-edge Frame Generation technology being introduced.
