Notably, players will officially face the High-Rank version of Rey Dau during the main story quest titled “A World Turned Upside Down.” To enhance your combat effectiveness, it’s advisable to equip the Earplugs skill on your armor or adornments to counter Rey Dau’s Weak Roar ability. Additionally, consider using armor pieces that provide resistance against Thunder elemental attacks.
While it’s possible to embark on a hunt without specific items, taking the following tools can significantly boost your chances:
- Flashpods: These are effective for stunning Rey Dau when it takes to the air, providing a moment of reprieve to deal damage.
- Nulberries: Carry Nulberries to swiftly cure the Thunderblight status effect, which can incapacitate hunters.
Understanding Rey Dau’s Weaknesses
Gaining the upper hand against Rey Dau involves knowing its elemental weaknesses and identifying key body parts to target during the fight.
Water serves as Rey Dau’s primary elemental weakness. For body part weaknesses, akin to fighting the Rathalos, breaking its head and wings provides strategic advantages, while severing its tail yields carving opportunities.
For those wielding sever-type weapons, such as the Greatsword, aiming to cut off Rey Dau’s tail can prove beneficial. In my experience, utilizing a Hammer was quite effective, as it allows for the destruction of critical body parts while delivering consistent blunt damage for stunning attacks.
Utilizing a Pitfall trap can also provide a temporary advantage, allowing for additional damage opportunities. Weapons that apply Poison, Sleep, or Exhaust status ailments are highly recommended for increased effectiveness during the battle.
Defeating Rey Dau: Tips and Techniques
Rey Dau primarily attacks using its two prominent horns, unleashing powerful lightning-based assaults, some of which can decimate your health if you are unprepared.

Interestingly, Rey Dau is one of your first major challenges in Monster Hunter Wilds. In my own experience against a High-Rank Rey Dau, I found success by consistently targeting its head and wings with my Hammer. Always aim to expose injuries to maximize damage opportunities.
In cooperative hunts, remain vigilant for changes in Rey Dau’s aggro towards other hunters, particularly during its bolt strikes, as the Drive-by Wing attack may redirect based on your teammates’ locations.
