Films based on video games usually results in low-budget movies only appreciated by some of the hardcore fans, at times not even that. Movies such as Street Fighter, Alone in the Dark and quite recently Final Fantasy were all movies considered as flops. Even the other way around, making video games out of movies is usually not a good combo either. Yesterday, Blizzard Entertainment announced that they will team up together with Legendary Pictures in producing a movie that will take place in the WarCraft world.
Legendary Pictures is an affiliate to the Warner Brothers company, and were behind recent flicks as Batman Begins and the new upcoming Superman Returns movie, which is still a work in progress. Blizzard Entertainment has had plans on making a movie for a long time, but it never really felt right, according to Blizzard's chief operating officer Paul Sams.
- We never met anyone that really understood our franchise, that got what we do. With Legendary, we found a company that specializes in building a small number of big movies, he says. He mentions that they are very similar to what Blizzard themselves do - making small nmbers of games; focusing on making them big and meaningful. Same for the production company Legendary Pictures.
And Legendary Pictures were looking for worlds that were rich in mythology and theme. They found Blizzard Entertainment and WarCraft.
- We were looking for [...] and partners who could help in the translation of making something that was going to be seen as standing above and beyond some of the other translations from game to film that have not worked," said the Legendary chief creative officer Jon Jashni.
The motion picture will not follow a story in any of the WarCraft games, rather be set in the WarCraft world filled with Trolls, Orcs, Night Elves and the Undead. The reason to be alarmed for a let-down is of course pretty big, considering the history between games and film. However, as Warner Bros together with Legendary Pictures will be a part of it and b eguided in the WarCraft world by Chris Metzen and the people at Blizzard, it can also turn ot to be quite a spectacular flick.
- We want to make a movie that will not only appeal to our existing fans, but will also bring in people that have never heard of Warcraft before. says Paul Sams to the New York Times.
