The Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE) has released its 2008 report on the state of video gaming. The 3-part report, conducted by Neilsen Games, contains over 103 pages of gaming statistics. The report determined that:
(1) Approximately 55% of gamers play video games to relax and de-stress;
(2) A majority of gamers believe that playing video games maintains mental fitness better than TV or movies;
(3) Approximately 42% of parents in The United Kingdom actively play video games, while Finland and Spain have parental gaming rates of 31% and 23% respectively;
(4) A majority of parents concluded that "playing videogames is a fun activity for the entire family;"
(5) Playing videogames is among today’s most common leisure activites;
(6) Over 93% of gamers recognize the PEGI rating labels; But less the 1/2 of the individuals surveyed found the labels useful when buying a video game;
(7) The age of the average gamer is 33 in the UK, 30 in Finland, and 26 in Spain;
(8) 44% of gamers have some school qualification or advanced school qualification, while only 20% have graduate or post graduate qualifications;
(9) Asia leads the world in software sales, followed by the EU and the USA and;
(10) European software sales were highest in the UK, followed by France, Germany, Spain, and Italy.
The data for this report was taken from a survey of 6000 gamers in 15 countries. The survey was carried out with respondents who were active gamers aged 16-49. Research was conducted online in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia.
It seems the average age of gamers keeps rising, thus supporting the saying: "You're never too old for video games!"
