College football, baseball, basketball and… Starcraft. That’s correct, you haven’t misread anything, a number of North American colleges and universities, including McGill, Princeton, Stanford, University of Chicago, Yale, and Harvard formed a Starcraft collegiate. So far the collegiate has 29 members, and judging by the big names there won’t be a lack of IQ for sure.

The format of the competition is quite simple: first comes the league, then top performers and possibly some invited professionals will compete in a single elimination tournament.

For more information visit the official website of the collegiate or read a New York Times article.

Now, what can we dig out from this: Starcraft as a competitive intercollegiate sport? Great! Could it possibly develop into a full-scale league with its own stars, sponsors, money prizes and possibly paid college fellowships? That depends solely on the popularity of the game. Perhaps one day a good Starcraft player will discover a Yale fellowship invitation in his mail box, let’s keep our fingers crossed.
