On the 6-7th March an online RaceWars tournament for the Russian community took place. More than 200 applications were received and no less than 96 players from different CIS countries (such as Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Latvia etc.) where chosen to defend the honour of their race. Almost every great player from ex-USSR was there to fight for his race. Among the ones playing names like Advokate[S2], yAn[S2], iG.Escape, MiG.Scout, Ro[S2], Ex[S2] and many more stick out a bit. The most interesting games were commented live on the big plasma screen in the PC centre VikaWeb in Moscow, Russia. Anyone interested in observing the games could go there. The commentated matches were also shoutcasted on an internet radio stream. All games were played online on the PGTour server - BnetX.
The system of the tournament had several characteristic parts. All the players had unique nicknames which were given to them by the judges and which reflected their group and race (e.g. AT1[RaWeN] where A is group, T is for Terran and 1 is the number of the player). It was done to lessen the psychological effect of playing against famous gosus, and help players to show their real potential. The other disputable peculiarity was the team round. In round four the players had to find a partner among them and play 2on2 games. The two teams that won passed on to the final. The idea of this stage was to show some really good team games as players who passed to the fourth round are really skilled. But the problem was that really good players (such as iG.Escape, [3D]creAtiv, EX[S2], White-Ra) who might have taken 1-3 place failed on this stage. It was especially to unfair iG.Escape who had just won in a very tough battle versus yAn[S2] 2-1.
The final also had its problems as HR-Marine (aka StarClan) who won against Fatal[S2] had to face A2[S2] in the battle for the first place, but he had no time to play. He was assured by one of the judges that he will get second place anyway, which was a mistake. Both players left the channel. But it was not final of 2 players, it was final of four players. The winner of that game would have taken the first place, but the looser would have to face eR22-Jogi in the fight for second place. As it was the mistake of the crew both the A2[S2] and HR-Marine shared the first place.
Let's jump straight into round number three. The results from there are as follows:
Round 3 (single elimination – 1v1)
Fatal[S2] > RiF)SouL 2-1
HR-Marine > Ro[S2] 2-0
[3D]creAtiv.vWeb > uQu)Van[Dex3]
Escape[S2] > Yan[S2] 2-1
White-Ra > Overdrive[a2] 2-1
EX[S2] > k7.Topick 2-1
A2[S2] > 88)Stre10k 2-0
eR22-Jogi > [3D]$m0ke 2-0
