What is Lord of the Rings Anime About?

The new released film, Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, will be an upcoming anime movie set in Tolkien’s universe and continuing the history of the Kingdom of Rohan. The film starts with King Helm Hammerhand and The Rohirrim’s war with the Dunlendings, 183 years before the Two Towers. Filmed in early 2024, it was delayed but is now moving forward. It claims to provide a new take on Middle-earth, merging Tolkien’s lore with animation.

The Release of Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

The film was announced in 2021, with the animated film rumored to release alongside the Rings of Power. But it soon became clear that they wouldn’t release simultaneously. It later confirmed the date as April 12, 2024. 

Unfortunately, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and subsequent delays the release date was further delayed. With these issues now fixed, the Lord of The Rings fans can rejoice again. War of the Rohirrim suddenly announced that it will open on December 13, 2024.

Is there a Trailer?

There is no marketing activity for The War of the Rohirrim yet from Warner Bros, but anticipation is high as the studio prepares to present the first look at the Annecy Film Festival on June 11 this year. As of now, there are few marketing materials for The War of the Rohirrim. There’s no trailer or official poster, other than some early promotional art and a 2023 Annecy Film Festival sneak peek. 

Who’s Making The Lord of the Rings?

The Lord of The Rings director Kenji Kamiyama has been confirmed as the man behind the film. It is his second feature film for Warner Bros., after the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Kamiyama is a recognized director with a great anime career, having produced sections of the popular anime Ghost in the Shell, Ultraman, and Stand Alone Complex and many more. 

Sources suggest that everyone involved in the War of The Rohirrim is looking forward to Kamiyama’s direction. His vision matches the thematic scope and aesthetic perspective of the movie and guarantees a faithful and gripping recreation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore.

Who will be joining the Cast?

Brian Cox lends his authoritative voice to the role of King Helm Hammerhand in the War of The Rohirrim. The film’s narrator is Miranda Otto and describes Eowyn as the Shieldmaiden of Rohan. Gaia Wise plays Hera, King Helm’s stubborn daughter and one of Rohan’s most important protectors. Luke Pasqualino plays the film’s titular hero Wulf, and Shaun Dooley plays Freca, the usurper and father of Wulf. 

Among these actors are Lorraine Ashbourne, Michael Wildman, Benjamin Wainwright, Bilal Hasna, Jude Akuwudike, Yazdan Qafouri, Laurence Ubong Williams and Janine Duvitski. While most roles have been revealed, some cast members ‘specific roles have yet to be revealed.

What Lies Ahead?

At this time, no sequels to the War of the Rohirrim in the animated Lord of the Rings are announced. But in case it is any good, it might release a new saga of animated prequels set in various areas of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Future films might examine different parts of the Lord of the Rings’ appendix or The origins of Elrond, Saruman, Sauron and even Smeagol.
