Path of Exile 2 features a new Weapon Swap system that lets you automatically switch your weapon sets and use the appropriate passive nodes based on the skill gems you use. This allows you to experiment with different weapons and builds and achieve new combos to increase your character’s power. We’ll explain how Weapon Swap works and how you can use it in PoE2.

How to use the Weapon Swap system in Path of Exile 2

In Path of Exile 2, you can have two weapon sets equipped in your inventory. Your primary set is the one you’ve been using from the start of the game. However, when you open your inventory, check above the weapon slots and you’ll see another clickable tab. This lets you slot in another set of weapons, which becomes your Weapon Set 2. This can be used in a few different ways, as we’ll outline below.

The Passive Skill Tree offers you a chance to specialize your Weapon Swaps by allocating points based on which set is active. This is what allows you to create potent combos (by leveraging Ailments for example) or tailor more offensive and defensive builds (for example, going tanky with Shield nodes and all-out damage with a two-hander). To use this feature, you need the following:

  • Weapon Set Points: These are earned during the campaign and unlock the ability to allocate points to specific Weapon Sets. They come from the Book of Specialisation, usually picked up from optional bosses and sidequests.
  • Unallocated Skill Points: Use them to assign to your Weapon Set rather than globally across your skill tree.

You can see which skills are active with each set between node connections by their colouring. Yellow represents global connections, red are allocated to Weapon Set 1, and green are allocated to Weapon Set 2.

When assigning points, make sure to select whether they should go to Weapon Set 1 or Weapon Set 2. You can toggle between two weapon sets in the upper-right corner of the screen. Whenever you activate the corresponding weapon set, those nodes will become active, and vice versa.

Normally, whichever weapon you have equipped will be used when you press a skill. However, by using Weapon Swap, you can assign specific skills to use particular weapon sets for more flexibility. To configure this, open your Skill Gem tab (press G by default) and click on the arrow to extend the specific skill description. Here, you can select which Weapon Set your character should switch to when using the skill. You can toggle either one or both of the options.

  • Weapon Set 1 or 2: You can choose to always swap to either Weapon Set 1 or 2 before using the skill.
  • Both Weapon Sets: If both boxes are selected, the skill will work regardless of which Weapon Set is currently active.
✓ Swapping weapons by default

You can also swap your weapon sets without having to use any skills. The Weapon Swap system just makes it easier to tailor to your skills. To simply swap your weapons, you can press X by default, which will switch between your equipped and alternative set.

If a skill requires a weapon condition that one set doesn’t meet, the system will automatically swap to the other set. For example, if you’re playing Warrior with Mace skills, then if you try to use a Shield skill with a 2-handed Mace equipped, it will switch to the Weapon Set with the Shield equipped.
