3 Steps to Make Potions in Minecraft
There are 2 main ways to get potions in Minecraft. The first one requires you to brew them in the brewing stand with specific materials. While the second method only requires you to look in specific places.
#1 Make a Brewing Stand
The brewing stand is a thin block made from a blaze rod and 3 cobblestone variant blocks (cobblestone, cobbled deepslate, or Blackstone). The only challenge part of this recipe is the blaze rod, which requires you to go to the Nether dimension and kill some blaze for their rod.
For the cobblestones, you need to use any pickaxe tier and dig down to find some stone blocks, then mine them for cobblestone. If you’re already in the Nether hunting for the blaze, you can also grab some Backstlones there as well.
Besides crafting, you can obtain Brewing Stand by searching the village churches, igloo basements, or the end ships.
#2 Prepare the Materials
Potion is a big system in Minecraft. When it comes to brewing potions, there are 10+ items that can be used to brew, as well as their combination and recipes. Let’s take a look at the brewing materials:
- Glass Bottles: a basic item to contain potions
- A Water Source: use to make water bottles from glass bottles
- Nether Wart: the primary crop to make potions in Minecraft! You use nether wart to turn water bottles into awkward potions.

#3 Make Potions!
When you have at least a brewing stand, some water bottles, nether warts, and one ingredient. It’s time to make potions!
Right-click on the brewing stand and you will see a total of 5 slots. The left slot is where you put the blaze powder. The top slot is for the ingredients. And the 3 bottom slots are for the water bottles, which can be made into potions later on.
With 3 slots, you can brew up to 3 potions of the same type with only 1 ingredient. Unless you have limited water bottles, it’s recommended to always brew 3 potions at the same time.
You don’t need all the ingredients above to make potions Instead, aim for the type of potion you want and only get what you need. Let’s say you want to mine some netherite, brewing a potion of fire resistance is a good choice! In this case, you will need 3 water bottles, 1 nether wart, 1 magma cream, and a Redstone dust if you want to increase the duration of the potions.
Brew happens sequentially, which means you have to add one ingredient at a time. To make any potions, you always need water bottles first. Then put the blaze powder and the bottles in the left and bottom slots respectively. Finally, add 1 nether wart on the top slot.
You will have 3 awkward potions. Now put 1 magma cream on the top slot again and wait, you will have 3 potions of fire resistance. Not stop there! You can add either Redstone and/or glowstone dust in the top slot for the extra potion’s duration and effect.
Other Ways to Get Potions in Minecraft
Witches and wandering traders in Minecraft can drop potions on death if they’re killed while drinking potions. While the wandering traders can only drop potions of invisibility, witches drop potions of healing, fire resistance, water breathing, and swiftness.
In addition, you can find potions in chests spawn in the end cities, igloos, swamp huts, ancient cities, and buried treasures. End cities contain 2 potions of healing, igloos have a potion of weak in their basement, ancient cities can contain up to 3 potions of regeneration and buried treasures have 1 potion of water breathing in it.
Moreover, bartering with the piglins is also a good source for a large number of potions of fire resistance. Each gold ingots barter with the piglins has a 1.74% chance to get either a potion.
