The easiest way to get yourself a team worthy of challenging for titles is to buy them from other clubs. But no matter how many wonderkids you poach from South America, it will never beat the feeling of seeing a kid with five-star potential pop up in your youth intake.
But unless you’re at the very best clubs, getting great youth players who could one day end up in your team is easier said than done, with most players getting written off before you’ve even signed them. That’s why we’ve put together a strategy you can use to give yourself a better chance of getting an excellent intake. We can’t guarantee golden generations every time, but you’ll have a much better chance of landing a few more starlets.

Improving your youth intake isn’t something that can be done immediately, and especially if you’re a lower-league or poorer team, this is something that you’ll have to implement over the course of several seasons so you’ll still have to rely on wonderkids and free agents for a couple of years while you get started. Luckily, it can be done, and we’ll take you through all the ways you can improve your youth intake. These are:
- Improve youth recruitment
- Improve facilities
- Increase junior coaching
- Hire a Head of Youth Development
- Increase reputation
Improve youth recruitment
Probably the number one thing you can change to increase your chances of a good youth intake. Improving your youth recruitment increases your scouting range, and the intensity of your scouting. This means you’re more likely to pick up some players that would otherwise have gone to other clubs. But that’s not all, as once you find them, you need to make your club appealing enough to join.
Improve facilities
Young players want to develop well, and having the best facilities is something that can attract plenty of great talent. Head to the Finances tab, and on the right hand menu, select Make Board Request, Facilities, and Improve Youth Facilities. If you don’t have a lot of money at your club, this is likely to be rejected, and you’ll have to convince the board to pay up.
✓Alex’s Advice
In countries like England or Spain you can get better quality youth intakes, but will have more competition with other clubs. In smaller countries, you may have less competition, but will likely get lower quality players too.
Improve junior coaching
Just like facilities, if you have great junior coaches at your club, this is going to attract more young players, as well as making sure the young players at your club are developing well. Head to the Make Board Request option again, this time heading to Finance, and clicking Increase Junior Coaching Budget. Again, this will likely take some convincing if you don’t have much money.
Hire a Head of Youth Development
A good Head of Youth Development determines the kinds of players you’ll be getting in your youth intake. They scout young players for your academy and drive the academy’s development. Get yourself one with good Judging Player Ability, Judging Player Potential and Working With Youngsters attributes. Look out for their preferred formation and playing style too, as you don’t want them finding players for a Wing Playing 5-3-2 if you’re running a Gegenpressing 4-3-3.
Increase reputation
Many things in FM come down to reputation, and youth recruitment is no different. If a youth player has a choice youth academies between Manchester City or Slough Town, they’re obviously going to choose City. Performing well in your league, winning trophies, and qualifying for continental competitions will all increase your reputation, and make your club a more appealing prospect for young talents.
