Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ combat is sleek stuff, giving you an arsenal of pointy weapons, abilities, and stylish flourishes to stab, assassinate, and otherwise cause harm to the many belligerent bandits, samurai, shinobi, and ronin across feudal Japan. Yasuke and Naoe’s drastically opposed playstyles mean there’s a bit of a learning curve, but both benefit from a nifty little lock on target mechanic, similar to the one popularised by FromSoft in Dark Souls and in subsequent releases.

You can circumvent a lot of pain by learning how to get Naoe and Yasuke to focus their attacks and abilities on specific enemies one at a time. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to lock on target in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

How to use lock on target in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

To lock on to a target in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you’ll need to press down on the R3 thumb stick on PS5, the right thumb stick on Xbox, or the middle mouse button/scroll wheel on PC. This will automatically target the closest enemy and any subsequent attacks or skills will target them and them only.

Once you’ve locked on to an enemy, you can switch targets by moving the camera – the right-thumb stick on PS5 and Xbox, or the mouse on PC. To cancel the lock on target, simply tap the same command again – press down on R3 on PS5 and the right thumb stick on Xbox or click the middle mouse button on PC.

The lock on target feature works from quite a long distance away, which makes it useful for using Naoe’s kunai and shuriken, or the bow and teppo if you’re playing as Yasuke. With lock on target enabled, you can hold the L2 button on PS5 or the left trigger on Xbox to get the reticule to automatically aim at the targeted enemy.
