EV, short for Effort Values, is a game mechanic firmly rooted in every Pokemon game. If you’re looking to play Pokemon Scarlet and Violet competitively, understanding your Pokemon’s EV and how to EV train them is crucial. As such, our guide will take you through every little detail about EVs and how you can effortlessly EV train your Pokemon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
What are EVs in Pokemon?
Think of EVs as a Pokemon’s Fingerprints. While every identical Pokemon will have the same Base stats, their EVs will be different from one another. At the same time every Pokemon can hold up to 510 EV which are to be spread among the six stats. Additionally, a maximum of 252 EV can be allotted to a single stat.
EVs are calculated in multiples of 4, which translates to +1 point in a stat. This is also why competitive players like to spread 256 EVs, which equals +63 points in a Pokemon’s 2 best-performing stats, while dumping the rest in an unwanted stat. If you’re looking to boost your Pokemon’s potential, you definitely want to EV train them right away.
5 Best Ways to EV Train in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
If it’s your Starter Pokemon or any other OU Pokemon in the game that you’ve caught, you’ll want to EV train those Pokemon right after getting them. EV training your Pokemon will ensure the correct stats are boosted to land an extra edge during competitive battles, and luckily there are several ways to EV train them.
1. Using Vitamins
Vitamins are the fastest way to EV train your Pokemon, but it will cost you a lot of money. If you’re looking to avoid Pokemon Battles, your best bet is to buy Vitamins, especially if you’ve got extra Pokedollars to spend.
That said, there are 6 Vitamins for each stat, which can be bought at any Chansey Supply store in the game. Be prepared, though, as these will cost you 10,000 Pokedollars. These Vitamins are consumed by your Pokemon and will raise 10 points per specific stat. We’ve listed every Vitamin and its effects upon using down below:
HP Up – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s HP stat.
Protein – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s Attack stat.
Iron – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s Defense stat.
Calcium – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s Sp. Atk stat.
Zinc – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s Sp. Def stat.
Carbos – A nutritious drink for Pokemon. This drink increases 10 base points for a Pokemon’s Speed stat.
So if your Pokemon has 0 EV points, and you want to max its HP stat, you’ll have to buy 25 HP Ups, which you’ll feed to your Pokemon, and you’re pretty much done. However, this will cost you 250,000 Pokedollars, which might be a time-saving method but not entirely cost-efficient. Luckily, some can be found lying around in the overworld, so be on the lookout for them!
2. Through Wild Pokemon Battles
You gain EVs through wild Pokemon battles, and once they are defeated, you receive their EVs. Depending on the wild Pokemon defeated, they can give out 1-3 EVs per battle, which are allotted to specific stats. To simplify things even more, suppose you send your Quaxly against a wild Magikarp; once you win, you’ll get 1 EV allotted to the Speed stat.
3. Using Power Items
Usually, you get 1-3 EVs per specific Pokemon battle. However, equipping your Pokemon with a Power item will grant it an additional 8 EVs, which results in a boatload of EVs. Keep in mind, though, that a Power item decreases a Pokemon’s stat. However, it isn’t so noticeable since you’ll be battling weak Pokemon like Magikarp and Lechonk to farm EVs.
Likewise, there are 6 Power items for every six stats. And the good thing is that they are not consumables, and you can find them pretty early at Delibird Presents in Mesagoza. Each of these costs 10,000 Pokedollars, and buying all six is recommended from the get-go. That said, here are the Power Items and their uses:
Power Weight – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this weight reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its HP stat to grow more quickly.
Power Bracer – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this bracer reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its Attack stat to grow more quickly.
Power Belt – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this belt reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its Defense stat to grow more quickly.
Power Lens – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this lens reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its Sp. Atk stat to grow more quickly.
Power Band – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this band reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its Sp. Def stat to grow more quickly.
Power Anklet – An item to be held by a Pokémon. Holding this anklet reduces a Pokémon’s Speed in battle but allows its Speed stat to grow more quickly.
Take the Magikarp above, which gives 1 EV in the Speed stat, so beating one with a Power Anklet will provide not 1 but 9 EVs. Thus, you can battle 28 Magikarps and have a maxed-out Speed stat for your Pokemon.
4. Using Feathers
Using Feathers on your Pokemon is also another way to raise EV stats in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Similar to Vitamins, Feathers also give EV per specific stat. However, instead of 10, they offer 1 EV per consumption. What’s more, these are very rare to find and can only be obtained from the overworld, Tera Raids and the auction house in Porto Marinada by outbidding NPCs.
Though the number they give is small, it’s worth using if you’re some points away from hitting a stat’s EV limit. With that said, the Feathers and their effects are given below:
Health Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s HP stat.
Muscle Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s Attack stat.
Resist Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s Defense stat.
Genius Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s Sp. Atk stat.
Clever Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s Sp. Def stat.
Swift Feather – An item to be used on a Pokémon. This feather slightly increases base points for a Pokémon’s Speed stat.
5. Using EV Reducing Berries
You might already know that your party Pokemon also receive a fraction of XP points after a Pokemon battle. But one thing you might need to learn is that they also receive EV points. So after defeating the Magikarp, all your party Pokemon receive an EV in Speed stat, which is a nuisance if you don’t want some Pokemon’s Speed stat growing. This is where EV-reducing Berries come into play.
Similarly, there are 6 EV-reducing Berries in the game, which reduces 6 specific stats, and after consuming one, 10 points per stat are reduced. Thus, if you see any unwanted stat increasing, Berries are there to help. The EV Reducing Berries are:
Pomeg Berry – Lowers HP.
Kelpsy Berry – Lowers Attack.
Qualot Berry – Lowers Defense.
Hondew Berry – Lowers Special Attack.
Grepa Berry – Lowers Special Defense.
Tomato Berry – Lowers Speed.
With all that said, Berries are unfortunately a rare find in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, especially regarding EV-reducing Berries. These Berries are earned through specific Tera Raid Battles, found in the overworld, and can occasionally be bought from the auction house in Porto Marinada.

Tips For EV Training Your Pokemon
Since EVs are shared with every Pokemon in your party, you’ll want to devise an efficient strategy, so the EVs won’t go into a Pokemon’s wrong stats. As such, here’s the best way to avoid that, so you can make the most out of EV training.
1. Choose a Strong Lead Pokemon
When EV training, you want to have a strong lead Pokemon whose EVs are either fully maxed or which you don’t care about. This ensures that this Pokemon pops out first at the start of every battle.
2. Pick a Pokemon Whose Stat You Want to Raise
Next up, fill the rest of your party with Pokemon whose same stat you need to raise. For example, if it’s Speed stat, have those Pokemon in your party that need a Speed stat boost. Also, ensure they are equipped with the relevant Power Item, which in this case is the Power Anklet.
3. Eat Sandwiches
Eating Sandwiches for the target Pokemon will significantly boost their encounter rate for at least 30 minutes. This is an excellent way to battle as many target Pokemon as possible within that 30-minute duration. After fighting the required amount of target Pokemons, your party Pokemon will have a fully trained EV for the stat you were aiming for in a short time.
