Fancy grabbing the classic assassin outfit in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? Though the latest entry in the series is relatively light on references to the Brotherhood of Assassins, Naoe picks up the Hidden Blade early on and her story arc does dip into her links to the famed shadowy organisation. Follow her quest line and you’ll even get your hands on what’s called the Apprentice Assassin armor set.

It’s a welcome nod to long-time fans wanting to explore Japan decked out in the same threads sported by Ezio all those years ago. It takes a bit of legwork to get, so in this guide we’ll walk you through how to get the assassin’s outfit in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

To find the assassin outfit, you’ll need to travel to the Old Kofun just east of Sakai in the northern part of the Izumi Coast sub-region of Izumi Settsu. However, it’s hidden away in a portion of the Kofun that isn’t accessible until you’ve completed a set of quests in Naoe’s Journey quest line.

To unlock it, you’ll need to visit four Kuji-Kiri meditation spots and play through the following flashback quests:

  • Shinobi Warfare
  • Mind and Body
  • A True Igan
  • Traditions

After that, you’ll need to complete the Naoe’s Journey quest called Before the Fall then take on the Wolves and Foxes quest. This quest takes place in Uji Tawara in the centre of the Little Leaf Glad sub-region in the south of Yamashiro and involves defending Tokugawa Ieyasu against grunts from Mitsuhide’s clan. 

Talk to Ieyasu after the fight then with Hatori Hanzo about the box Naoe’s father was protecting when he died in the prologue. Choose ‘Talk to Hanzo’ when prompted. Hanzo will then instruct you to search a large Kofun in Settsu for the Tomb of the Ancients. This then unlocks the Secrets of the Blade quest at the previously mentioned Old Kofun in Izumi Settsu.

Where to find the assassin armor in the Old Kofun

Go to the Old Kofun and enter through the hidden entrance on the southwestern side of the mound. You’ll also spot a new question mark inside the Kofun on the world map – it’s the Tomb of the Ancients you’re searching for.

Make your way into the Kofun and once you reach the first chamber, head forward then squeeze through the gap on the right (if this is you first time visiting, you’ll need to head left instead and navigate your way through the cave to find the treasure before focusing on finding the Tomb of the Ancients). Press on forward into the cave littered with skeletons until you reach a door bearing the classic Brotherhood of Assassins insignia. Examine the door to open it.

Beyond the door, you’ll find the Tomb of the Ancients – a long-abandoned assassin’s hideout. Pick up the European Notebook to the left of the entrance to further the Secrets of the Blade quest. Head into the room on the left to find a mannequin wearing the assassin outfit. Examine it to add it to your inventory. The armor set consists of two pieces: the Apprentice Assassin Gear Epic Light Armor, which restores 1% health on hit, and the Apprentice Assassin Hood Epic Headgear that removes +1 health segments on assassinations.

Exit the Old Kofun to trigger a cut scene with Yazuke reading the notebook, which turns out is written in Latin. This will wrap up the Secrets of the Blade quest, unlocking the next one in Naoe’s Journey quest line called The Assassins, which involves finding outposts in Iga, Omi, Yamato, and Kii provinces. For now, you’ve got your hands on an assassin outfit in Assassin’s Creed Shadows that certainly looks the part if you ask us.
