Splatoon 3 is swarming with Octarian infantry to splat, but every now and then a boss comes along in need of an extra-large inking. Octobot King L3.GS is the first boss in Splatoon 3, but don’t go thinking this makes them a pushover.

Appearing in The Crater after completing the first four missions in Splatoon 3, the Octobot King L3.GS is piloted by recurring Splatoon Big Bad, DJ Octavio, and will dole out robotic rage on its master’s behalf. We’ll show you how to rebuff this rust bucket and proceed further into Splatoon 3’s Story Mode.

During the first Phase, the Octobot King L3.GS will hop around to different perches at the edge of the battlefield, firing its robotic fists at you. As soon as the fists get within your range, spray them with as much ink as possible. This will halt them in the air and – with enough spraying – send them hurtling back towards the boss, damaging and destabilizing him.

It’s advisable to cover as much of the ground with ink as you can early on, as this will greatly aid your movement, allowing you to dive and speed away from the Octobot King’s projectiles. Just be sure to keep an eye on the boss while you do, or you may end up getting squashed by a giant mecha-fist while covering the ground.

Occasionally, the Octobot King will switch out its regular projectiles for a drill fist. This cannot be halted in mid-air; you need to dodge the drill’s impact. Once the drill is lodged in the ground, cover it with ink to send it back at DJ Octavio and get a good hit in.

Once enough damage is done, Octavio will fall out of the mech. Ink him just like you have the projectiles, and he careens back into the mech, beginning phase two.

In the second phase, the Octobot King gains access to an Ink Vac, which will instantly suck up any of the ink you have placed on the ground. Cover it again as quickly as you can and be ready for the second wave of the assault.

The Ink Vac will not only suck up your Ink, it will make it much harder for you to coat the boss’ projectiles. It will also shoot out damaging Ink Bombs that cover your Ink in the opposing color.

Thankfully, while the Ink Vac is a definite upgrade to the Octobot King, it also comes with a glaring weakness. While the Vacuum is active, throw Smallfry towards the boss and he will jam the Vac, leaving you able to send projectiles back at the boss as normal.

In its third phase, the Mech’s hands will slap down with an open palm, covering more ground and sending out a damaging shockwave that must be jumped over. After dodging the shockwave, the hand can be inked in the same way as the other two projectile modes.

The slap attack is used in addition to the boss’s suite of attacks from the first two phases. Stay calm, launch Smallfry when needed, and ink up those robo-hands, and soon Dj Octavio will come flying out for a third and final time. Ink him once more to beat the boss and gain access to Alterna.
