Whether you’re someone who swears by the Pomodoro Technique for getting work done, or you just need a bit of a reminder on what to do next with a to-do list right up on your computer screen, Weyrdlets’ focus tools are a really neat addition.

How To Activate Focus Tools

To use the focus tools added in Weyrdlets, you'll need to be playing Weyrdlets from your desktop. One of the biggest attractors of the game is that your cute little digital pal can leave the game and get to work with you, hanging out on your PC's desktop to keep you company while you work.

To enter Desktop mode, use the bottom right Hot Corners button and select the second option from the bottom, a computer monitor with a pawprint on it. This brings you and your pet back to your computer, where you've now got ample chances to hang out as you work!

Once you're in desktop mode, you'll want the gear icon on your Weyrdlets toolbar, the last icon in the brown section of the toolbar. By dropping this down, you'll be able to access the first button, which looks like a downward-facing arrow, which enters the Widget menu.

There are plenty of accessibility settings offered in Weyrdlets, which can be changed from the Widgets menu. These include whether your pet digs on the desktop, whether you see the current time or your pets stats, and plenty more. We're looking specifically, though, at the Pomodoro and To-Do List settings.

How To Use The Pomodoro Technique Timers

The Pomodoro Technique is a focus method some people swear by, wherein you work for a set amount of time, take a short break, return, and repeat until it's time for a slightly longer break. People find it helpful to pause for a minute or two and recenter before diving back into work, and if you're among them, Weyrdlets offers a baked-in timer.

The Pomodoro timers in Weyrdlets allow you to customize your workload and timers, giving you options to change to best suit how the method works for you.

The settings in the Pomodoro Timer in Weyrdlets are:

  • Pomodoro, which decides the total length of time you work for before receiving a long break. Long break to long break is considered one Pomodoro.
  • Short Break and Long Break settings, offering different amounts of times for your different mid-work breaks.
  • Auto-Start settings for both the Pomodoro as a whole and for breaks, as well as whether your Pomodoro starts immediately and automatically.
  • Alarm chooses the sound that plays when one of your timers is up.
  • Effect impacts what happens to the adorable little tomatoes that fall from the top of your screen to indicate that your timer is up.

When you've finished a whole Pomodoro, your computer will rain tomatoes to let you know it's time to either start or stop working. It's a neat way to keep you on track without needing to use external timers for the Pomodoro Method!

How To Use The To-Do List

Requiring a bit less explanation, Weyrdlets also offers you a fairly straightforward To-Do list option. If you're someone who forgets the things they need to finish on a daily basis, then the to-do list that stays on-screen (if you'd like it to) offer great reminders baked right into your PC.

After activating the to-do list from the Widgets menu, you'll have the option to add tasks to this list, which then remains on screen to keep them fresh on your mind. Once you're finished, click the task to finish it. You can choose whether cleared tasks stay on the list or not.

If you have a second monitor on your PC setup, I've found it helpful to leave the to-do list on the monitor I'm not using and check it throughout the day - that way it's still prevalent, but it's not taking up too much real estate on the main monitor.
