Started in 1955, Guinness World Records is the biggest source of world records, listing virtually every accomplishment known to humankind. Starting in 2008, Guinness published a Gamer's Edition alongside their traditional WR books, and this became more popular among the youth demographic.

10 Resident Evil

Worst Dialogue In A Video Game

Close

Resident Evil

Survival Horror Released March 22, 1996 Developer(s) Capcom Publisher(s) Capcom Platform(s) PlayStation (Original), Sega Saturn, Nintendo DS, PC Powered by Expand Collapse

If you're familiar with the original Resident Evil, this one shouldn't be surprising. The classic 1996 game that started it all has probably the best so-bad-it's-good dialogue in gaming, with so many hilarious meme-worthy moments. Appropriately, Resident Evil has the record for the worst dialogue in the medium, with Guinness listing EGM, IGN, Red Bull, Lackuna, and Audio Atrocities as sources.

The actual dialogue line is the infamous "Master of Unlocking" quote given by Barry Burton. A good choice, but this game has some seriously stiff competition for the worst line. There's the "root of the problem" quote by Chris, but also the moment near the end of the game where Jill and Barry repeat, "You're here too" to each other.

9 Scarface: The World Is Yours

Most Swearing In A Video Game

Scarface: The World Is Yours

Action-Adventure Released July 25, 2006 Developer(s) Radical Entertainment Publisher(s) Vivendi Universal Platform(s) PC, PS2, Wii, Xbox (Original) Powered by Expand Collapse

Is there any game more appropriate for having the record for most swears in the medium than Scarface: The World Is Yours? Tony Montana is the Miami drug lord badass who not only swears up a storm but delivers it in the best way possible.

Andre Sogliuzzo does a pretty job of emulating Al Pacino's portrayal of the character, and the voice performance feels like Tony Montana, not some poser, which can sometimes happen in these movie-licensed games. Scarface: The World Is Yours features the F-bomb 5,688 times in the complete script, and Tony Montana wouldn't have it any other way.

8 Grand Theft Auto 3

Most Critically Acclaimed PlayStation 2 Video Game

Grand Theft Auto 3

Action Adventure Released October 23, 2001 Developer(s) Rockstar Games Publisher(s) Rockstar Games Platform(s) PS2, Xbox (Original), PC, macOS, Android, iOS Powered by Expand Collapse

Regarding the best games on the PlayStation 2, there are many favorites. You have Final Fantasy 10, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and many more. However, when looking at the most critically acclaimed game and stepping back a bit, it makes sense that GTA3 takes that spot.

At a 97 percent Metacritic score, GTA3 was the most game-changing, influential, and important title on the PS2 and possibly the decade. It played like something brand new and just blew everyone away, reviewers included. GTA3 essentially birthed the sandbox open-world genre as you know it, and even though Vice City and San Andreas are better, it's understandable why GTA3 would get the highest rating.

While Grand Theft Auto 3 has the highest PS2 Metacritic score, it actually shares the record with another game, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. This title, however, has a record of its own for being the first PS2 game to support online play.

This was for competitive multiplayer, and you can hook it up just through USB instead of needing the adapter like most games afterward. Pro Skater 3 was released about a year after the PS2 launched, which is interesting considering online PS2 play was a hyped-up feature before release, so you'd think an online game would come to the system relatively quickly.

Minecraft

Sandbox Survival Released November 18, 2011 Developer(s) Mojang Publisher(s) Mojang Platform(s) 3DS, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PS Vita, Xbox One, Xbox 360 Powered by Expand Collapse

The record for best-selling video game has actually moved around quite a bit over the years. At one point, it was the original Super Mario Bros., Wii Sports, and even Tetris, but the current record holder is Minecraft. The building block phenomenon that took the world by storm in 2011, Minecraft is still one of the most popular games in the world right now.

Few games from the early 2010s are still relevant today, and GTA5 and Minecraft are some of them. Speaking of GTA5, that game comes in second place with 200 million copies sold, but that still ain't got nothing on Minecraft's 300 million.

5 Halo 2

Best-Selling Xbox Video Game

Halo 2

Shooter Released September 4, 2004 Developer(s) Bungie Publisher(s) Microsoft Game Studios Platform(s) Xbox (Original), PC Powered by Expand Collapse

For people familiar with the original Xbox, you know the best-selling game on the console is either going to be one of two games: Halo 1 or 2. The correct answer is Halo 2, and it makes sense, considering how huge the hype was for this game. The original Halo was Xbox's major system seller, and Halo 2 needed to deliver.

It did with an all-time great FPS campaign and universally loved Xbox Live multiplayer. Halo 2 sold 8.46 million copies, compared to 5 million sold for Halo 1. This is even more impressive, considering Halo 2 was released about a year before the launch of the Xbox 360.

Jet Set Radio

Platformer Sports Released October 31, 2000 Developer(s) Smilebit, BlitWorks Publisher(s) Sega Platform(s) Sega Dreamcast, PC, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Android, iOS Powered by Expand Collapse

Jet Set Radio is a beloved classic by Sega that you've probably heard of, but what many people don't realize or don't bring up in conversations is that Jet Set Radio was the first game to ever use cel-shading. This is the famous art style present in many beloved games like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Persona 5, Okami, numerous Pokemon games, and so much more.

The Dreamcast was a big technological leap at the time, and games like Jet Set Radio perfectly emphasized that. It showcased the cel-shaded visual look that influenced countless more to follow.

Alone in the Dark

Survival Horror Released 1992 Developer(s) Infogrames Publisher(s) Infogrames Platform(s) PC, iOS Powered by Expand Collapse

The 2024 Alone in the Dark flopped pretty badly, but there's a reason why this franchise keeps getting resurrected. The original title was, in fact, the first fully 3D survival horror game, influencing everything to follow, including the big one, Resident Evil 1.

Sure, there were other survival horror games prior, with most citing 1981's 3D Monster Maze as the first. However, that isn't a fully 3D game, considering its tech. 2 Deadly Premonition

Most Critically Divisive Survival Horror Video Game

Deadly Premonition

Survival Horror Released February 23, 2010 Developer(s) Access Games Publisher(s) Ignition Entertainment, Marvelous Entertainment, Rising Star Games, Aksys Games, Numskull Games Platform(s) PC, PS3, Switch, Xbox 360 Powered by Expand Collapse

If there's one game that has a ton of flaws but contains so much heart, passion, and creativity that you can't help but love it, it's Deadly Premonition. Appropriately, this title holds the record of the most critically divisive survival horror game, with both 2/10 scores and a 10/10 score.

This kind of reception is very unusual in the business, but that's just a sign of how special Deadly Premonition is. Even at the time, this game looked years old, but it's not about the looks here because, by the end, you will be completely blown away.

1 Clockwork Aquario

Longest Time Between A Video Game Project Start And Final Release

Clockwork Aquario

Platformer Action Released December 14, 2021 Platform(s) PS4, Switch Developer Westone Publisher ININ Games, Strictly Limited Games Powered by Expand Collapse

A big record that fascinates many is the longest development time for a game. Development hell stories are very interesting, but Clockwork Aquario differs greatly from the likes of Duke Nukem Forever or Dead Island 2. Those games were in development and still being worked on until their release, whereas Clockwork actually had been canceled in the early 90s.

Then, in 2017, Strictly Limited Games wanted to do a restoration project, and within four years, the game finally came out. The total development time for the game was 28 years and 81 days. It is cheating a bit since the project was abandoned for decades, but a record's a record.
