While surviving and making the most of your Viking life in Valheim, you will come across various status effects. These effects can be to your benefit, but many can be quite harmful. With so many status effects, it can be hard to know what each one does. Fortunately, we are here for you.

In this guide, we are going to go over every status effect in Valheim, as well as what it does. This will be separated by positive and negative effects, as well as other categories like armor effects and those that don't fit into any category. Additionally, we will mention the main source of each effect.

Positive Status Effects

Positive effects will be to your benefit, meaning that you want to have one. Below, you can check out every beneficial status effect.

  • Fall speed capped at 5 m/s
  • Fall damage decreased by 100%

Wear the Feather Cape

As long as you are wearing the Feather Cape

Fire

  • Decreased Wet Timer quicker (you will dry quicker)
  • Removes Cold and Freezing

Stand near Campfire

As long as you remain near a fire source

Magic Barrier

Depending on your magic skill, block anywhere from 200 to 700 damage

Equip the Staff of Protection

60 to 120 minutes, depending on the staff's quality

Rested

  • +50% Health Regeneration
  • +100% Stamina Regeneration
  • +50% XP Gain
  • +100% Eitr Regeneration

After sleeping and waking, you will receive this effect

Duration depends on your comfort level

Resting

  • +200% Health Regeneration
  • +300% Stamina Regeneration
  • +300% Eitr Regeneration

Sleep in a bed

This will last while you are sleeping, and after 20 seconds, turns into Rested

Shelter

  • Enabled you to have the Resting Effect (if you lay in bed)
  • Prevents Freezing and Wet

Remain indoors, with at least 80% roof cover

As long as you remain indoors

Negative

Negative effects have an undesirable outcome, that you will want to avoid as often as possible.

Cold

  • -50% Health Regeneration
  • -25% Stamina Regeneration

Remain outdoors during the night (no nearby fire)

Lasts until you get near a fire or the morning begins

Encumbered

You are unable to :

  • jump
  • run
  • block
  • dodge
  • recover stamina

Your walk speed will drastically decrease

Go over your maximum carrying capacity

Remains if you don't drop any items

Freezing

  • -100% Health Regeneration
  • -60% Stamina Regeneration
  • 1 Damage per second
  • Resistance to Fire Damage

Explore the Mountain biome (without preventative Mead)

  • This can also occur while fighting Modor and during the Drake event as well

As long as conditions remain, but you can negate this with Armor effects, mead, or a simple campfire.

Frost

-100% Movement Speed (Decays over time)

Take frost damage

Duration depends on the health you lose

Lighting

Take instant lightning damage

Lightning

This is instant, but the visual effect lasts for 3 seconds

Poison

Pure damage over time (ignores defenses)

Take poison damage

The duration depends on the enemy

  • Poison Resistance Mead only resists potential poison, rather than negating already-active poison.

Slimed

  • -50% Movement Speed
  • Weak to Fire

Be targeted by The Queen's spit attack

A few seconds

Smoked

2 damage per second

Stand in smoke

Remains until you leave the smoky area

Stagger

Stuns

Take physical or lightning damage until you reach the most amount of possible stagger

  • This is dependent on the amount of damage, with strong attacks causing more stagger.

Stagger decreased at the rate of 20% per second.

Tarred

  • -50% Movement Speed
  • Weak to Fire

Enter a tar pit

10 seconds

Wet

  • -25% Health Regeneration
  • -15% Stamina Regeneration
  • Resistance to Fire
  • Weak to Frost
  • Weak to Lightning

Submerge in water or get rained on

This will remain until you get out of the wet situation, when a timer will count down to when you become dry

Armor effects will last as long as you have the specified armor on.

Fenris Set

Wearing just the coat will provide Frost Resistance

Sneak skill +15

Eitr Weave Set

  • +100% Eitr Regeneration
  • Resistance to Frost
  • Feather Fall

Individually, the hood, robe, and trousers provide Eitr Regeneration, while the Cape provides Frost Resistance and Feather Fall

Mead & Wine

There are three drinks that provide resistance effects, which you can see listed below.

  • Fire Resistance Barley Wine
  • Frost Resistance Mead
  • Poison Resistance Mead

To make these three drinks, you will need to first make the base at a cauldron. With the base in hand, head to the Fermenter and make the drink of choice. All three will last 600 seconds, which is ten minutes.

Misc.

Lastly, we have miscellaneous effects that don't really fit into one category.

  • Vomit a consumed food
