One of Until Dawn 2's lead actors, Dacre Montgomery, has revealed in an Instagram post that the upcoming sequel has been in the works for at least four years, if not even more.

This week's State of Play showcase had some truly stand-out games, especially God of War: Laufey and Rayman Legends Retold, but you'd be hard-pressed to call any of them truly surprising. Thanks to leaks, rumours, and hints from insiders, we ended up having a pretty good idea of what was going to be in the show.

That being said, I don't think any of us were expecting to see Until Dawn 2, which stood out as one of the only major surprises from the showcase. Even with it being rumoured for quite some time now, the sequel looks so different from the original that it really caught a lot of us off guard. Now that it's out in the world, we even have an idea of how long it's been cooking behind the scenes.

Dacre Montgomery Reveals He's Been Working On Until Dawn 2 For Four Years

That Means Firesprite Has Likely Been On It For Even Longer

Shortly after Until Dawn 2 was revealed to the world, one of its leading actors, Dacre Montgomery of Stranger Things and Power Rangers fame, shared a post on his Instagram celebrating his role in it. Montgomery says that he grew up gaming (with a goated choice of Prototype as his favourite game), and that he's been "floored" by the commitment of those he's worked with.

It's a very sweet message that shows how dedicated Montgomery is to Until Dawn 2, but the most interesting part is when he mentions that he joined the "Until Dawn 2 family" four years ago, confirming that the game has quietly been in development for at least that long. There have been rumours for some time about the project, but it's nice to have a more certain timeline.

What makes Until Dawn 2 even stranger is that the remade version of the original included an ending that implied Sam would be returning for the sequel, which doesn't appear to be the case.

Four years is already plenty long, but Firesprite has likely spent even more time than that working on the game, as Dacre very likely didn't join the project from day one. If you consider all of the story development, casting, and early pitching that had to be done, it's much more likely that it's been more than five years in the making, which tracks with rumours of the game being called Project Heartbreak.
