Summary

  • Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is being made as an entry point for newcomers and those that have taken a break from the series.
  • Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo admits that he doesn't know where people should start the series, but hopes the remake is a good place.
  • He also wants the game to help "revitalize" the Trails series, which he believes has "grown niche in recent years."

Trails is a pretty niche JRPG series when compared to the likes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, but it's still been going for well over two decades. Unlike those previously mentioned franchises, Trails differs in that every single game shares the same world and characters. That makes getting into the series rewarding, but also extremely daunting.

Just like any long-running JRPG series, the question that is asked by most people wanting to get into Trails is where should they start? It feels like almost every fan you speak to has a different answer, with some recommending modern titles like Daybreak or Cold Steel - as they're widely accessible and easy entry points - while the puritans out there would most likely urge you to go chronological and start with the Sky or Crossbell arcs.

Trails In The Sky Remake Is Being Developed As An Entry Point For Newcomers

An End To The Debate Once And For All

It's such a tough question that even Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo admits that he doesn't quite know what to tell people that ask him. He said as much in a recent shareholders meeting first reported on by Suzuki Online, and then translated by GamesRadar. In the meeting, Kondo claims that the recently announced Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is an effort to try and create a good starting point for newcomers, or a place to try and bring back those that haven't played in a while.

"When people come up to me and ask, 'I want to get into the series, where should I start?,' I sometimes don’t know what to tell them," says Kondo. He then says that Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is "a message to longtime fans who haven't played in a while or have grown a bit distant from the series".

He also hopes that Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will help "revitalize the Trails series", as Kondo believes it has "grown niche in recent years." It has always been a relatively niche series, but it's widely accepted the fanbase has been growing in the West, at least enough for previously Japanese exclusive titles like Zero and Azure to get Western releases. I do have my fingers crossed that this remake can give the series another good kick up the backside though.
