Building skills is one of the main mechanics that make The Sims 4 an interesting game because, as in real life, success of any kind will require the right skills. The good news is that your Sim does not have to be alone as they navigate their learning process. Other Sims can support faster skill learning by mentoring because as they say, teamwork makes the dream work.
What Is Mentoring?
Mentoring in The Sims 4 is exactly as it sounds, and exactly as you would expect. Sims will use their own knowledge and ability to support a learning Sim in acquiring a new skill or enhancing a weak skill.
This feature is a part of The Sims 4 base game, which means you will not need any DLC to benefit from mentoring.
Whether you're playing to complete a challenge, or merely having fun, having a Sim in your household with the ability to mentor others can be very helpful.
How To Get The Mentor Trait
Mentoring is acquired through the aspirations reward store. It has a one-time cost of 1,000 reward points. Purchasing this reward will grant your Sim the mentor trait.
The new trait will not replace any existing ones, it will simply be added alongside the Sim's original traits. Once you have purchased this reward, your Sim will be prepared to pass their expertise along.
How To Mentor
Sims with the mentor trait will be able to mentor any Sim as long as the Sim trying to learn the skill is a novice. All you need to do is click the Sim after they have started practising and find the option, which is literally called mentor, in the pie menu.
Sometimes this option will be among the first few but if you can't see it, try checking in More Choices.
The time-consuming part of mentoring is the one that comes before being able to mentor other Sims.
To be able to have your Sims mentor others, you will have to achieve full mastery of the desired skill. After your Sim obtains the mentor trait, they will be able to mentor other Sims in nearly every skill, as long as you have maxed it.

All Skills That A Sim Can Be Mentored In
Unfortunately, mentor Sims can't teach every skill. Still, the available skills make up a majority of the game's skills, meaning a mentor is useful in most scenarios.

There is no option to mentor a Sim in cooking. However, experienced Sims can still give out cooking tips as they watch another Sim cook.
This usually serves to boost their sociability, and can sometimes have a positive effect on the cooking Sim and their ability to quickly acquire skill points, depending on whether they get any moodlets that would boost them.
Cheats To Quickly Make A Mentor Sim
Making the perfect mentor Sim can be daunting work. After all, there is a lot of preparation that goes into it, with having to study or practice a skill for extended periods of time. Thankfully, there are cheats to make the process easier.
While they are not always permissible during challenges, cheats can help you make the perfect Sim for every job and story.
Accessing the command box works differently for all systems. On PC and Mac, you will need to press CTRL + SHIFT + C. If you are a console player, be it Xbox or PlayStation, you will be able to access the command box by holding down all four triggers at the same time. That is, L1 + L2 + R1 + R2.
The first thing you will need to do is ensure that cheats are on. It is recommended that you input the command before attempting to use any cheats, even if you believe cheats are already enabled.
Activating cheats requires typing or pasting testingcheats on or testingcheats true into the command box. After doing that, you can simply pick a trait and use the corresponding cheat to max it.

You will also need to get the reward points to buy the mentor skill if you're choosing to use cheats to scale up. You can do this by entering sims.give_satisfaction_points 1000.
Replacing the number at the end will enable you to set the skill to any level you want. For example, stats.set_skill_level Major_Logic 5, instead of 10. In that same way sims.give_satisfaction_points 5000 will give you 5,000 points instead of 1,000.
More Ways To Enhance Learning Skills
When a mentor isn't available, Sims can still take advantage of a few other things to make their learning just a little faster. You should also remember that it is always a good idea to take good care of your Sim's motives before you send them to study or practice an activity, as this will allow them to focus on that for longer periods.
Learning With The Ideal Moods And Moodlets
One way Sims will be able to learn much faster is if they're in the ideal mood for performing certain tasks. You want to aim for moods that will help your Sims feel more affinity for what they are doing, as well as moodlets that will boost them. Sims learn faster when they are:
- Happy or Very Happy
- Inspired or Very Inspired
- Focused or Very Focused
- Confident or Very Confident
Sometimes these moods will happen as Sims perform the activities, which is a plus. It is recommended that you achieve the mood before sending them to practice the skill, though, so you don't waste any time hoping the ideal mood strikes.
Using Other Rewards From The Reward Store
There are some amazing rewards in the store that can be bought with points, which you get by completing wants during normal gameplay. Some of these rewards are pricey but can help Sims achieve more proficiency in learning, while others are cheap and simpler but still useful.
- Mood potions: with a cost of 200 points each, these are the least pricey items that can be useful for boosting learning. Drinking one of these potions will instantly make the Sim be in a specific mood for roughly three hours of in-game time.
- Morning Sim: one of the three least costly traits at 1,000 points. This can help Sims be more proficient in building skills during the morning.
- Night Owl: the counterpart to morning Sim, which also has a cost of 1,000 points. This trait makes Sims more proficient in building skills at night.
- Speed Reader: this is the third trait costing 1,000 that can help with building skills. Sims with this trait finish books faster.
- Savant: the most expensive trait, costing a whopping 4,000 points, is unsurprisingly the most efficient. This trait makes Sims build skills much faster than regular Sims.
