PlayStation has reportedly been working on native PS3 emulation for "quite some time," according to industry insider Jeff Grubb, though he thought that the company would have announced plans by now.

No matter how you feel about PlayStation as a whole, you have to admit that the PS5 is a pretty impressive piece of kit. It's got pretty much everything you'd want from a home console, though one thing that has been a constant source of criticism is its backward compatibility features, or lack thereof to be more specific. Unlike the Xbox, you can't pop in a disc to play anything released before the PS4, and even the console's digital offerings are pretty sparse.

A PS2 classic I never got a chance to play.

PlayStation has made some efforts to remedy this, releasing first-party classics like Sly Cooper and Daxter in recent weeks, and now it seems like real effort is being put into finally getting PS3 games up and running on the console natively. At the moment, the only way to play PS3 games on PS5 is through streaming, and that can lead to actual queues for single player games, as was seen with Fallout: New Vegas shortly after the release of the Fallout TV show.

PlayStation Is Working On Native PS3 Emulation, Says Jeff Grubb

According to Jeff Grubb during the latest episode of Game Mess Mornings, who recently held firm to his prediction that a State of Play would take place in May, developers at Sony have been working for "quite some time" on getting PS3 games running natively. He even explained that he thought the announcement of the feature would have taken place by now, but that missed window "doesn't mean it will never happen."

If this is true, it would mean that several classic titles still stuck on the PS3 could finally see PS5 releases. Metal Gear Solid 4, the first two Infamous games, the Resistance and Killzone series, and several older Ratchet and Clank games are all currently only playable on PS3, meaning you have to drag out old hardware or resort to less scrupulous methods. Fingers crossed that this is true, and we get some form of announcement soon, so Cole MacGrath can finally be freed from outdated hardware.
