Sonic Christmas Art Contains Heartbreaking Reference To Maria

A new piece of Christmas art on the official Japanese Sonic Twitter account features a heartbreaking reference to Sonic Adventure 2's Maria and how much her death affected Shadow.
The latest episode of Tails Tube already showed Sonic the Hedgehog fans that the gang isn't great at celebrating the holidays (especially with Sonic just openly friendzoning Amy in front of everyone), but it looks like one character is going to have an even worse time than the rest of them - Shadow the Hedgehog.

PostsOver on the official Japanese Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter account, a new holiday-themed piece of artwork was shared that shows an incredibly spiffy-looking Shadow staring through a shop window at a pair of blue shoes. Any seasoned Sonic fans probably just felt their heart sink, as the shoes look exactly like the pair that Maria Robotnik was shown wearing in Sonic Adventure 2.
According to DeepL, the text alongside the tweet reads, "Powdery snow dances in the streets of Mission Street. Walking alone amidst the bustle, Shadow's eyes are momentarily caught by the show window of a certain store. A pair of bright sky-blue shoes with a slightly mature atmosphere. In that one moment...what does Shadow see in those shoes?"
Twitter's translation of the post ruins the moment a little bit as it translates that last bit as "What will Shadow see when he puts them on?".
The post doesn't explicitly say that they're supposed to be Maria's, but it's made pretty clear by Shadow's shocked expression that they're supposed to resemble what Maria used to wear. Considering how most brand Twitter accounts just embrace the holly jolly side of the holidays, it's a surprisingly heartbreaking post to be sharing just around Christmas, as Shadow is essentially just being reminded of the most important person in his life.
For those that don't remember who Maria is, she's the granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik and someone who Shadow spent a lot of time with when he was growing up. Unfortunately, she was eventually gunned down right in front of Shadow's eyes, which is what caused him to be as aggressive and aloof as he is in the mainline series.
The questioning tone of the Twitter post seems to imply that we might get to see a little bit more of Shadow's reaction to seeing the shoes that remind him of Maria, but dear god I don't think I want to. It's hard enough seeing his little shocked expression in this piece of art, let alone seeing what happens next. Happy holidays, everyone - enjoy the heartbreak.
