Summary

  • The second trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is here...
  • ...and Shadow has a gun, just like he did in his 2005 spin-off game.
  • It also looks like we're sticking with the Sonic Adventure 2 plot for the most part, albeit with Gerald Robotnik still alive at this point.

The latest trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is out now, finally giving us another look at Shadow's cinematic debut. This is also another chance to hear Keanu Reeves' take on the character, as he voices Shadow for the first time.

Better yet - we get to see Shadow with a gun. Yes, really. He's even on his motorcycle when we see it, so we're getting a surprising amount of nods to the Shadow spin-off game here.

New Sonic 3 Trailer Released Ahead Of December Premiere

As you can see in the trailer, it also looks like we're sticking pretty closely to the plot of Sonic Adventure 2. Sure enough, it's going to be a little different since the Sonic movie universe already has a different set-up to the games, but all the important bits are here.

We see Shadow playing a part in Gerald Robotnik's evil schemes, presumably as revenge for what happened to Maria - who we also get another look at in the trailer. The main divergence here is that Gerald is alive at the time of the story, and gets to meet his grandson, Ivo Robotnik (Eggman).

We also have to note that joke at the beginning of the trailer, which establishes that Pokemon exists in the world of Sonic. However, this seems to be more in the sense that Pokemon is also a multimedia franchise in Sonic's world, rather than there being any kind of crossover. Sorry to those of you hoping that Nintendo and Sega were secretly working on a joint Smash Bros. cinematic universe.

Keanu Reeves' Shadow is also set to appear in DLC for Sonic X Shadow Generations. It launches on December 12 and costs $5.99.

This isn't all the Sonic 3 news we've had recently. Over the weekend, the official song for the film, Run It by Jelly Roll was released on streaming platforms. Unfortunately, many fans seem to think that it's a poor fit for the film since it's from a genre that few of us would associate with the Blue Blur. It also appears to squash our hopes that the credit music will be the iconic Live & Learn by Crush 40.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 opens in theatres on December 20.
