Making money and keeping your Sims alive can be a challenge in The Sims, with so much to do each day in the game to keep everyone happy. If you're looking for a little potential assistance and don't mind a similar potential for chaos, consider getting a genie lamp.

Posts 1The Genie in the original Sims is capable of granting a variety of wishes for your Sims, but while they're excellent blessing when they go the way you're hoping they will, they're chaotic messes most of the time outside of that. We encourage you to make wishes at your own risk!
The Genie Can Grant Wishes, Or Bring Mayhem
Another of the plentiful additions from the Livin' Large expansion added innately into the Legacy Edition for The Sims, you can purchase an Antique Lamp from the Other (+) tab in the Miscellanious section of Buy Mode, which will need to be placed on a table or surface. You can't add the Genie to your family in any way in this early game, but you can still summon the Genie by rubbing the lamp once per day.
Doing so summons the Genie forth, and he'll ask your Sim one question, and the answer you give decides what might happen next. The Genie will always grant your wish when you make one with him, but the outcome seems to be bad more often than it's good. Sure, you could gain more than §3,000 in wish for money if household funds are low, or the Genie could give you extra piles of bills, all of which incur penalties if they're not paid just like your normal bills that come in the mail every few days.
Some players enjoy trying to find success in the game by purchasing several Antique Lamps, which allows them to make multiple Genie wishes each day. You can make as many wishes as you have lamps, so if you're feeling brave (or even just curious on what mayhem could unfold), it may be worth a try.
You can also save your game before making a wish for the day, in case something goes awry. You should be saving often anyway, but you can always reload the game if the Genie is a little too mischievous for your liking.

Your Sim's relationship with another Sim increases all the way, and that Sim falls in love.
Your relationship with a random Sim in your Relationships panel decreases considerably.
Money
A pot of gold appears, potentially containing thousands of free Simoleons.
Piles of extra bills appear, and your Sim must pay them to avoid punishment like normal household bills.
Water
A water fixture appears on the lot (fountains, hot tubs, etc.).
The current lot is flooded with water puddles that must be cleaned up, with caution around electrical items.
Work
The genie chooses a few of your Sim's skills to increase by one point.
Every one of your Sim's skills is decreased by one point.
Given the random nature of the fire when items spontaneously combust as part of bad outcomes on the genie lamp, you'd be wise to place fire alarms near the genie lamp if you're using one. It's common to have smoke alarms in the kitchen, since cooking can be pretty dangerous in this game, but if the genie lamp is past a door in another room, the alarm won't pick up the fire until the flames reach that room. It's always better safe than sorry - the genie can be ruthless!
