It was announced at the end of 2023 that the next game in the Subnautica series is currently in development, with a penciled in release window of Early 2025 for fans to look forward to. Unfortunately, that's pretty far away, and with little to go off of in terms of how the game will look or play, fans of the series have been writing up their wishlists for what they want to see and possible improvements that developer Unknown Worlds could work on.

While there are lists as deep as the ocean of Subnautica itself, there seems to be one universally agreed upon change that fans would like to see in the third game. According to the game's subreddit, many feel like Below Zero was a bit too chatty for their liking, and that the third game should make them feel "totally isolated" when they're exploring the oceans.

First brought up by Reddit user DPPanda5779, they implore Unknown Worlds not to include the character portraits that feature in Below Zero whenever you listen to PDA entries, claiming that they "ruin the experience and immersion" as they could no longer imagine what the characters look like as they could in the first Subnautica.

It seems like a rather minor complaint, but it's proven to be a very popular talking point among Subnautica fans, with DPPanda5779's post racking up thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments. You'll find more than a few like-minded individuals in the replies too, such as Reddit user Updated_Autopsy, who feels like the character portraits take away from the solitude of the game and made Below Zero much less scary than the original as a result.

Yes. This is part of what makes the original scary at first: you're all alone. There were other survivors, but they're all dead. And the only reason why you're still alive is because you got lucky.

There is a little bit of pushback from other fans though, as there is with pretty much video game-related discussion on social media. For example, Reddit user Capocho9 thinks that the whole point of Below Zero was to provide players with a more in-depth story, and having disembodied voices talking to the player wouldn't get across distinct personalities.

Either way, it looks like Unknown Worlds won't really be able to cater to everyone, but the vast majority seem to want a more isolated experience than what they got from Below Zero. Some just want the first Subnautica again, but bigger and better, and while that would probably be perfectly fine with the majority of fans, something tells me Unknown Worlds has much bigger ambitions than that. We'll find out what it has cooking later this year.
